The Original Birkin Exhibition: A Unique Luxury Item Returns to Japan

The Return of a Cultural Icon: The Original Birkin Exhibition

In a highly anticipated event, Valuence Japan will host a special exhibition titled The ORIGINAL BIRKIN Exhibition in Omotesando, Tokyo, from January 21 to January 25, 2026. This exhibition presents the original Birkin bag personally designed for the late Jane Birkin, a true cultural symbol of luxury and sustainability.

A Journey Through Time and Luxury

The exhibition marks a significant moment in the realm of luxury re-use and cultural heritage. In recent years, the re-use market for luxury brands has surged, drawing attention to the importance of sustainable consumption. Valuence Group has embraced this ethos as a Circular Design Company, dedicated to passing valuable items to future generations while fostering a sustainable future for both people and the planet.

In July 2025, Valuence made headlines by winning a bid for Birkin's original bag at a Sotheby's auction in Paris. This piece, a prototype crafted by Hermès in the 1980s, holds a unique cultural significance, showcasing the character developed from years of use along with personal inscriptions and sticker traces. Its acquisition highlights the intricate relationship between luxury and sustainability.

Following its debut in Japan in November 2025, the Original Birkin made a significant impact as part of a special exhibition co-hosted by Valuence, offering the public their first chance to view the historical item. This exhibition took place at ALLU OMOTESANDO, drawing attention from fashion enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Global Recognition

Additionally, in December 2025, the Original Birkin was featured prominently in the ICONS: Back to Madison exhibition at Sotheby’s, celebrating the company's rich history. It participated in the Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week followed by a showcase at Sotheby’s new headquarters in New York. The bag is also included in Phaidon’s publication titled Icons: 100 Extraordinary Objects from Sotheby’s History, solidifying its place in the annals of luxury items.

This upcoming exhibition in Japan allows visitors to reconnect with the bag’s journey, emphasizing the value inherent in items that are used and cherished over time. The aim is to present a new relationship between luxury and circular practices, allowing guests to immerse themselves in this exploration of heritage and sustainability.
