Introducing BELCEAU: A New Era of Mid-Scale Wooden Construction in Japan
On June 1st, 2023, LAD Corporation unveiled its new mid-scale wooden architecture brand, BELCEAU. At the heart of BELCEAU's vision is the concept of creating wooden structures that embrace the community like a cradle, nurturing both the physical home and the lives of its inhabitants.
BELCEAU aims to achieve circular architecture, utilizing timber as a way to sequester CO2 while minimizing environmental impact throughout the construction, deconstruction, and recycling processes. Since the establishment of the law promoting the use of wood in public buildings in 2010, the incorporation of wood into building construction—both public and private—has become a significant topic in the architecture industry. Given Japan’s abundant forest resources and the pressing environmental issues, transitioning to wood in mid-scale buildings is urgent.
Recent advancements in technology have led to innovations such as the establishment of fire-resistant specifications, Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) techniques, and wooden trusses, making wooden constructions on par with reinforced concrete and steel frameworks regarding durability, fire resistance, and sound insulation. Additionally, wood buildings offer superior insulation and airtightness. As we approach the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, numerous wooden structures are being planned, including the 'Grand Roof Ring,' recognized as the world’s largest wooden building structure constructed with CLT, setting a new standard that highlights the potential of wooden architecture.
Due to rising construction costs, many businesses are consulting LAD about transitioning from reinforced concrete or steel frameworks to wooden structures, which can be a more cost-effective alternative. The lightweight nature of wooden buildings also reduces the load on the ground, potentially lowering the need for piles and ground improvements.
Despite the availability of abundant forest resources in Japan, challenges like cost, distribution issues, and a shortage of skilled labor hinder the effective use of domestic timber. Shifting to wooden constructions for mid-scale buildings will invigorate the forestry industry while preserving traditional Japanese timber building techniques.
At LAD, we are dedicated to planning and designing attractive and efficient mid-scale wooden buildings through BELCEAU. Our commitment to this modern approach aligns with societal needs as we work towards realizing a decarbonized society and forging a sustainable future for generations to come.
