Columbia Distributing to Acquire Stake in Hayden Beverage to Strengthen Northwest Beverage Presence
Columbia Distributing Expands Its Horizon with Hayden Beverage Investment
In a significant move aimed at strengthening its foothold in the Pacific Northwest, Columbia Distributing has entered into a letter of intent (LOI) to acquire a stake in Hayden Beverage Company. This declaration was made public on June 1, 2026, marking a strategic expansion into Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
Hayden Beverage Company, a family-run distributor based in Idaho, has built a commendable reputation. The partnership brings together two established distributors that share similar supplier relationships, complementary portfolios, and a mutual focus on operational excellence and customer satisfaction. The collaboration has been in the works for some time, especially following Hayden's acquisition of Scout Distribution-Idaho in 2025, which further cemented their connection.
One of the notable aspects of this partnership is that the Hayden ownership group will also acquire an indirect interest in Columbia, fostering a relationship that aligns their long-term priorities. This unified approach is poised to spur continued growth within the region, optimizing resources for both parties.
Both companies have been proactive in their strategic pursuits, with Hayden having acquired three wine distributors over the past two years. Furthermore, just prior to this announcement, Hayden completed the purchase of RNDC's equity stake in their Idaho joint venture. Columbia, on its end, announced a separate agreement to acquire certain RNDC wine and spirits supplier rights in Oregon and Washington, along with associated assets in Alaska. These collective actions aim to enhance their overall beverage platform across the Pacific Northwest significantly.
Despite the structural changes, both Columbia and Hayden plan to maintain their existing operations and leadership. Day-to-day processes will remain unchanged, ensuring that teams retain their local market focus, with no layoffs or employee shifts expected.
Dodds Hayden, Owner and Chairman of Hayden Beverage, expressed enthusiasm about the formalization of their long-standing relationship. He stated, "We’ve always worked well with Columbia, sharing information, solving problems, and pushing each other. It feels like we are finally making an informal partnership a formal one. Our mission is to be the best executing distributor in the Northwest, and Columbia has always been our benchmark. This partnership combines a ton of expertise, capability, and strong cultures."
Chris Steffanci, President and CEO of Columbia Distributing, echoed similar sentiments, describing the partnership as an exciting step forward. "This is an exciting step for Columbia, Hayden, and our shared vision for total beverage distribution in the Pacific Northwest," Steffanci stated. He highlighted Hayden's impressive operations in Idaho and the robust supplier relationships they have cultivated, emphasizing the added value this alliance brings to both parties.
Columbia Distributing is not new to the beverage industry. Established in 1935, the company has played a pivotal role in nurturing some of the most recognized brands in the beverage sector. With a workforce of 2,800, it serves over 24,000 retail customers in Oregon and Washington, spanning nearly 170,000 square miles. This planned expansion into Alaska will see the addition of around 1,125 accounts, ultimately extending its reach to over 835,000 square miles.
On the other hand, Hayden Beverage, founded in 1970 by John Hayden and later bought by Dodds Hayden in 2006, is hailed as Idaho’s premier beverage distributor. The company's multi-division model brings specialized knowledge across different categories, channels, and markets, with a broad portfolio that includes wine, beer, cider, and non-alcoholic beverages.
As both companies embark on this new journey, it will be intriguing to observe how their synergy will reshape the beverage landscape in the Pacific Northwest, creating opportunities that benefit their teams, customers, and communities at large.
