Celebrating 30 Years of Technological Collaboration by ITRI in Europe

Introduction

On June 12, 2026, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Europe office in Berlin, partnering with leading research institutions. Notable organizations like the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Fraunhofer Society, and the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations (EARTO) participated in this groundbreaking event. This year not only marks three decades of existence but also highlights significant advancements in technological cooperation between Taiwan and Europe.

A Legacy of Innovation

Founded in 1996 in Germany, the ITRI Europe office has played a pivotal role in enhancing Taiwan's industrial innovation and transformation capabilities. Serving as a central hub for innovation collaboration, it has facilitated Taiwan's involvement in over 20 Horizon Europe programs and established cooperative agreements across 14 European countries, including Germany, the UK, France, and Spain. The institute has been integral in brokering almost 100 joint research and development projects, showcasing its commitment to fostering innovation.

From Technology Scout to Strategic Partner

During the anniversary celebration, ITRI's Chairman Tsung-Tsong Wu emphasized that the milestone signifies an evolution in ITRI's role; from a mere technology scout to a strategic partner embedded within the European innovation ecosystem. He underscored that effective technological collaboration is rooted not only in technical expertise but also in the trust that is cultivated over time. A prime example of this is the longstanding partnership between ITRI and the Fraunhofer Society, which dates back to 1992. The two organizations are extending their memorandum of understanding for an additional five years, focusing on health care, ICT, and green energy, while also venturing into new areas like AI and robotics.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Vision

Johann Feckl, Director of Pre-Competitive Research and International Affairs at Fraunhofer, reinforced the importance of trust, continuity, and a shared vision for sustainable impact in applied research. Feckl noted, "International networking is essential in recognizing early technological developments and transforming them into impactful innovations." In line with this, ITRI has recently hosted the ITRI UK Tech Day to commemorate its new branch's first anniversary, further deepening its partnership with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), focusing on semiconductor technology, AI, and more.

Focus on Emerging Technologies

In alignment with the European Union's priorities concerning net-zero ambitions, biomedicine, digital innovation, and space technology, ITRI plans to bolster its technological ties between Taiwan and Europe through its offices in Berlin and London. The institute is also keen on expanding collaborations in France and the Netherlands, along with Central and Eastern Europe in emerging domains such as drone technology.

With its extensive network encompassing industries, government entities, academia, research institutions, and startups, ITRI aims to accelerate technology exchanges, facilitate political dialogues, and promote cross-sectional innovations, positioning Taiwan as a key player in the global industrial transformation.

Conclusion

The 30th anniversary of the ITRI Europe office stands as a testament to the fruitful collaboration between Taiwan and European nations. As ITRI continues to grow and evolve, it is set to further enhance its role as a driving force in technological innovation, shaping the future of industries and research across borders.
