Colorado State University's Cutting-Edge Laser Research Facility



Colorado State University (CSU) has officially reached a significant milestone in the development of its Advanced Technology Lasers for Applications and Science (ATLAS) Facility, with the recently completed topping-out ceremony marking the end of its structural phase. This two-story building, covering an impressive 77,626 square feet, is set to house some of the world's most powerful laser systems, positioning CSU as a leader in next-generation laser science.

The successful topping-out event signifies the installation of the final structural beam, which is a key milestone in the building process, executed by McCarthy Building Companies under the design of SWBR and developed by Tetrad Real Estate. According to Cassandra Moseley, CSU's vice president for research, the ATLAS Facility embodies national significance, promising to foster an innovative environment in Northern Colorado destined to enhance advancements in fusion energy, advanced materials characterization, and fundamental scientific research.

The structural phase itself was quite complex, involving a whopping 590 tons of steel installed across five sequences, following the site preparation that saw the pour of 7,355 cubic yards of concrete. With the structural frame now in place, the project will transition into critical construction phases, which will include the installation of enclosure, mechanical, and electrical systems, as well as the specialized buildout required for cleanroom and laboratory environments.

CSU’s ATLAS Facility remains on track for substantial completion by December 2026. Tyler Richardson, a senior vice president at McCarthy, noted the pride his team feels in partnering with CSU, Marvel Fusion, and Tetrad. He stated, "This facility represents a substantial advancement for the university and the broader scientific community, and we're thrilled to see it progress to the next phase."
