SABER Sounds Alarm on Health Dangers Linked to Synthetic 7-OH Products
The Scientific Association for Botanical Education and Research (SABER) has issued a grave warning regarding the potential public health risks associated with synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH). This synthetic variant is often misrepresented as a natural kratom leaf extract, a claim that raises significant concerns over consumer safety and misinformation.
Understanding the Issue
7-hydroxymitragynine is a compound derived from the kratom plant, traditionally known for its mild energizing effects as well as pain-relieving properties. Historically, kratom leaves have been consumed without major adverse effects. However, the introduction of synthetic 7-OH has transformed this landscape. Unlike the natural leaves, these synthetically produced versions are significantly more potent, sometimes up to 30 times greater than morphine at opioid receptors.
Professor Paula Brown of the BC Institute of Technology highlights the critical nature of this situation, stating, "Synthetic 7-OH is not kratom—it is a highly potent, unregulated chemical. Consumers have a right to transparency, yet these products are often mislabeled and marketed deceptively as natural extracts, without proper quality and safety testing, they carry a significant risk of causing harm."
Key Concerns Raised by SABER
1.
Potency and Potential for Abuse: As mentioned, synthetic 7-OH can pose real dangers, including a higher risk of dependence and overdose due to its excessive potency.
2.
Deceptive Marketing Practices: Synthetic products are frequently advertised falsely as 'natural kratom extracts,' thereby misleading consumers who are seeking safer plant-based options.
3.
Severe Health Risks: The absence of clinical safety data leaves consumers vulnerable to a range of health issues, which may include respiratory depression and severe toxicity.
4.
Regulatory Lapses: These synthetic products fail to meet the FDA’s criteria for food or dietary ingredients and are classified as unapproved drugs. Numerous states, including Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah, have instituted bans on synthetic products containing over 2% of total alkaloids, further highlighting the regulatory challenges.
Urgent Call for Action
In light of these alarming findings, SABER implores policymakers to tighten regulations surrounding synthetic 7-OH products. The organization advocates for stringent penalties against manufacturers who engage in misleading labeling and marketing practices. To truly protect the public and guarantee access to safe and effective kratom products, comprehensive legislation compatible with the Kratom Consumer Protection Acts must be established.
Consumers, health professionals, and legislators need to collaborate to demand accountability from those producing and disseminating these dangerous synthetic substances.
