My Special Aflac Duck® Lands in Sacramento Valley
In a heartwarming initiative, Aflac Incorporated has introduced its innovative robotic companion, My Special Aflac Duck, to children undergoing cancer treatment in Northern California. The donation was made to the Keaton's Child Cancer Alliance in Roseville, marking a significant contribution of nearly 200 ducks to the organization in the past two years. The total number of ducks distributed freely since the program's inception in 2018 now surpasses an impressive 33,000.
Inés Rodríguez Gutzmer, Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer at Aflac, beautifully articulated the impact of this program, stating, "Approximately 26 children are diagnosed with cancer every day in the United States, including the brave 'Child Cancer Warriors' from the Keaton's Child Cancer Alliance. These amazing children and their families embody determination and resilience, showcasing a shining spirit that continues to shine bright. We are grateful to the Keaton's team for allowing us to be part of their incredible work every day. Together, we’re making a difference in the lives of these children, their families, and their communities."
My Special Aflac Duck is not just a cuddly toy; it's a social robot designed with advanced technology to help children navigate the challenges of medical procedures. The companion aids young patients in expressing their feelings, practicing distraction techniques, and preparing for treatments. Developed in collaboration with over 100 children, family members, and medical professionals through Empath Labs, the duck has proven to significantly reduce distress, anxiety, and even the nausea associated with medical treatments.
A comprehensive three-year study found that children with My Special Aflac Duck reported less suffering and fewer side effects from medical procedures compared to those who did not receive the duck. Additionally, parents and caregivers observed reductions in their own stress and anxiety levels, showcasing the duck's capability to function as a vital tool for children and those supporting them. The ducks were delivered during the annual Keaton's Operation Gobble event, where over 20 families received Thanksgiving meal kits.
Jessica Alonso, Executive Director of Keaton's Child Cancer Alliance, expressed gratitude for the partnership with Aflac, stating, "We are incredibly thankful for our collaboration with Aflac to support these brave young warriors and their families on their journey with cancer, providing them with the personalized support they need. This generous contribution of My Special Aflac Ducks will significantly impact the children we serve. These comforting and interactive companions provide emotional support, helping children navigate the complexities of treatment while bringing smiles and strength to their families during challenging times. Together, we empower them to face cancer with courage and hope."
Since its launch in 2018, My Special Aflac Duck has garnered numerous accolades, including recognition as one of Time Magazine's 50 Best Inventions and being crowned 'Best in Show' at the CES for innovative electronic products. Aflac has committed over $184 million towards childhood cancer research and treatment, including support for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children's Hospital of Atlanta.
