Singapore Unveils Innovative Living Solutions at Milan Design Week's Prototype Island

In an exciting exploration of design and innovation, Singapore has officially launched Prototype Island at Fofo Buonaparte 54, in the renowned Brera Design District during the Milan Design Week 2026. Organized by the DesignSingapore Council, this latest initiative follows the success of their previous Future Impact series, positioning Singapore as a dynamic and adaptable design nation.

The exhibition showcases 15 curated works from a diverse group of both emerging and established designers, under the careful curation of Hunn Wai and Eian Siew. Each piece reflects Singapore's innovative spirit, tackling pressing global challenges through avant-garde designs and technologies.

Upon entering the venue, visitors are greeted by an impactful installation designed by Lanzavecchia + Wai. This sets the stage for the display of works organized around three pivotal themes: Technological Material Ecologies, Care Infrastructures Cultural Continuities, and Everyday Infrastructures. This thoughtful arrangement illustrates the commitment to adaptability and continuous evolution.

Technological Material Ecologies

Under this theme, innovators like Parable introduce their modular ceramic system called Iris, which marries functionality and artistry while accommodating changing user needs. Simultaneously, Jake Tan and his collaborators create an interactive installation to engage visitors with quantum concepts paralleling daily life. Additionally, pioneering efforts by Carlos Bañón and Yiping Goh leverage AI in architecture, preserving the creative essence while enhancing design efficiency.

Care Infrastructures Cultural Continuities

This segment delves into the rich history of craftsmanship intermingled with modern technology. Serina Lee's Language System merges traditional Chinese calligraphy with the English alphabet to create interactive garments; Roger Ng's Lustre Series captures the essence of Peranakan culture using contemporary motifs. Collaborators Melvin Ong, Shervon Ong, and Andy Yeo explore synergies between 3D printing and traditional lacquer crafting, producing vessels that bridge technology with heritage. Aditi Neti revitalizes the ancient practice of kolam drawing, integrating mechanics without losing its core significance.

Accessibility and Design with Care

Tusitala's 3D-printed tactile book exemplifies design centered around accessibility, showcasing images in raised formats alongside Braille for enhanced reading experiences. Additionally, Celeste Seah employs generative AI to foster connections and narratives for those with dementia, emphasizing the significance of dignity in care. The weareSuper creative agency further exemplifies this vision by creating porcelain plates co-designed with people with disabilities, bridging barriers in functional design.

Everyday Infrastructures

Offering practical, transformative solutions, the *ASTAR Innovation Factory presents their customizable 4D-printed cast system as a patient-centric alternative to traditional casts. Zoey Chan, Singapore's National James Dyson Award winner in 2025, introduces Nido, an innovative insulin needle holder featuring compact and discreet design. In a playful twist, Reynard Seah's Noda takes inspiration from plant cell structures to create versatile designs for shelters and playground systems.

Hunn Wai, Lead Curator of Prototype Island, emphasizes the exhibition's aim to translate inquiry into tangible actions, addressing constraints and societal realities through inspiring and imaginative responses.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the
DesignSingapore Council will host a series of engaging events, including talks led by guest speakers like Maria Cristina Didero, covering current trends in contemporary design and collaborative practices.

The council also invites the community to its
'Singapore Night' event on April 22, where attendees can enjoy Singaporean cuisine, beverages, and music, further fostering connections between Singapore and Milan through design.

Through
Prototype Island, Singapore not only presents innovative designs but also engages in meaningful dialogues with the global community, showcasing design as a shared language for creating more livable and inclusive futures.

As the event unfolds from
April 21 to 26**, this exhibition promises to redefine how we perceive and interact with design on a global scale, solidifying Singapore's place as a leader in creative solutions for the future.
