CPL Expands Healthcare Leadership with New Southeast Regional Head Doug Spies

CPL Strengthens Healthcare Leadership with Doug Spies

CPL, a leading full-service architectural, engineering, and design firm, is pleased to announce the appointment of Doug Spies as the Vice President and Southeast Regional Healthcare Leader. With over three decades of dedicated experience in healthcare architecture and strategic advisory roles, Spies’ addition amplifies CPL’s commitment to excellence in healthcare design, a core growth market for the firm.

Doug Spies, MHA, AIA, ACHA, NCARB, CSI-CDT, and LEED AP, comes to CPL with a distinguished career that includes pivotal roles on both the client and consultant sides of complex healthcare environments. His multifaceted expertise will enable CPL to offer enhanced support to healthcare providers, particularly in areas like operational and clinical challenges, as well as capital planning.

Todd Liebert, CPL’s Chairman and CEO, expressed his enthusiasm about Spies' appointment, stating, "Doug's background uniquely positions him to help healthcare organizations align strategy, operations, and the built environment. His perspective as both an owner and an architect is invaluable, allowing us to partner with clients in a transformative manner.” This appointment is part of CPL’s broader strategy to solidify its leadership in healthcare design on a national scale while enhancing partnerships with healthcare organizations.

As the Southeast Regional Healthcare Leader, Spies will play a significant role as a strategic advisor to various hospitals and health systems. His comprehensive skills encompass guiding regional and enterprise-wide planning, large-scale capital programs, clinical sub-specialties, and optimizing operational functions. This holistic approach supports organizations in balancing high-quality patient care with financial responsibility and long-term sustainability.

“I aim to empower healthcare leaders to make informed decisions with confidence,” said Spies. “When architects have a profound understanding of a client's operational needs, the results transcend beyond just architecture; they foster environments conducive to healing and effective care delivery.”

Before joining CPL, Doug Spies held the position of Senior Vice President and Program Director of Advisory Services at Gresham Smith. His academic credentials include a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Walden University and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois–Chicago. A recognized thought leader in the healthcare realm, Spies is an active participant in the American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). He frequently contributes to eminent healthcare publications, including Becker’s.
