Shield AI Concludes V-BAT Operations in Europe, Enhancing Border and Emergency Response
In early June, Shield AI's unmanned aircraft system (UAS), known as V-BAT, became fully operational in Europe under a strategic contract with Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. This collaboration also involved Global Sat Tech, underscoring an initiative to streamline border management operations across various terrains and scenarios. V-BAT has played a vital role in surveillance and security functions, covering expansive maritime and land borders, and has been instrumental in emergency response missions as well.
One notable contribution came in late July during the second wildfire response mission, where V-BAT was deployed to combat a rapidly spreading fire in eastern Bulgaria. Operating from a remarkable distance of 30 kilometers, V-BAT successfully detected the flames and quickly provided valuable real-time data to local authorities engaged in firefighting efforts. This feature allowed for immediate monitoring of the fire's movement, identification of hotspots, and efficient planning and execution of water drops by helicopter teams.
Brandon Tseng, the Co-founder and President of Shield AI, underscored the effectiveness of their operations, stating that during the past two months, there had been notable decreases in irregular border crossings and criminal activities—a result attributed directly to the V-BAT system. Tseng emphasized that the operational capabilities of V-BAT are versatile, extending beyond simple border interception to include real-time firefighting support.
What makes V-BAT particularly impressive is its unique ability to integrate seamlessly within complex aerial environments, showcasing its reliability and the innovative spirit behind its design. During operations, Bulgarian authorities managed to deconflict airspace between V-BAT and manned aircraft solely through altitude separation—an achievement that speaks to the advanced capabilities of the platform.
Nikolay Kerin, CEO of Global Sat Tech, highlighted the project as a prime example of how technology and collaboration can directly enhance security measures across Europe. By merging advanced aerial surveillance with practical operational needs, the partnership aims at creating a flexible intelligence-based solution that reinforces member states and elevates public trust regarding border security practices within the region.
The V-BAT is an advanced vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAS that features a single-engine design capable of autonomous takeoff and landing. Recognized by both U.S. and international forces, V-BAT is tailored for a broad spectrum of missions that span various operational environments, including contested electronic warfare scenarios.
