TerraSafe Appoints Dr. Julie Willoughby as CEO

In a significant move towards innovation in the packaging industry, TerraSafe Holdings, Inc. has appointed Dr. Julie Crowe Willoughby as its new Chief Executive Officer. This decision marks a vital step for the company as it aims to lead the global transformation toward plastic-free barrier packaging. Dr. Willoughby, who previously served as the Chief Technology Officer since 2024, will now spearhead efforts to expand TerraSafe's portfolio of bio-based materials into commercial markets around the world.

A New Era of Packaging

With growing demand from regulators, brands, and consumers for sustainable packaging solutions, TerraSafe is at the forefront of developing products designed to protect both our planet and its people. The global packaging market, worth approximately $400 billion, is gradually shifting away from environmentally harmful plastics, and TerraSafe is positioning itself as a leader in this critical evolution. Dr. Willoughby emphasized the importance of creating materials that enable performance similar to plastics while utilizing only renewable resources and environmentally friendly chemistry.

The company has made remarkable progress since its inception by Big Idea Ventures' Generation Food Rural Partners Fund (GFRP) in 2023. Under Dr. Willoughby’s technical leadership, TerraSafe has established its 60,000-square-foot research and development and manufacturing facility in Youngsville, North Carolina, and developed an impressive track record of innovation. Notably, the company has created over ten patent families for high-performance bio-based materials and launched two commercial products that leverage their cutting-edge polysaccharide film technology.

Dr. Willoughby's Visionary Leadership

Dr. Willoughby brings to the table more than three decades of invaluable experience across various industries, including chemicals, packaging, textiles, and life sciences. Her unique expertise combines deep technical knowledge with an entrepreneurial spirit, making her ideally suited to lead TerraSafe's ambitious vision. Before joining TerraSafe, she held roles of significant impact, including Chief Scientific and Commercialization Officer at Circ®, where she was instrumental in scaling their textile-to-textile recycling technology. This initiative contributed to Circ® earning recognition as a 2023 Earthshot Prize finalist and a 2024 Fast Company Most Innovative Company accolade.

Her background includes leadership in materials innovation at Nike, as well as academic contributions at North Carolina State University’s Wilson College of Textiles. With experience at Dow Corning and MeadWestvaco, Dr. Willoughby possesses a profound understanding of industrial manufacturing processes and circular material systems, essential for the development of sustainable packaging solutions.

“I grew up in the chemicals industry,” Dr. Willoughby stated. “That journey instilled in me a deep respect for the sector and an urgent conviction that it must evolve. My work is focused on creating a new generation of materials consciously designed with the well-being of people and the environment in mind.”

Opportunities for Investors

The timing of Dr. Willoughby’s appointment is momentous, coinciding with TerraSafe's opening of its Series A equity round. The objective is to enhance manufacturing capacity and expedite commercial partnerships within the food and beverage sector. With its robust intellectual property framework, onshore production capabilities, and an adept team that meshes advanced materials science with practical execution, TerraSafe shows promise for investors looking to engage with the next industrial revolution in the burgeoning bioeconomy.

“The materials revolution is upon us,” Dr. Willoughby affirmed confidently. “We are fully prepared to usher it into the market.”
