The Importance of Conditions for Health Innovations
On April 26, World Intellectual Property Day, the Latin American Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industry (FIFARMA) spotlighted the vital role that the right conditions play in fostering innovation in the health sector. Innovations, ranging from new treatments and vaccines to scientific breakthroughs, are not mere accidents but rather the end result of extensive research, talent, and collective effort. However, for these innovations to successfully transition into tangible solutions for patients, specific enabling conditions must be cultivated.
Intellectual property (IP) is pivotal in this context. It is not just an abstract concept but a practical tool that safeguards knowledge, spurs investment, and propels scientific advancement towards those most in need. Yaneth Giha, Executive Director of FIFARMA, underscored this point by stating, "Every health innovation is backed by a vast human effort. Intellectual property is part of the conditions that allow this effort to translate into well-being and development for the region."
Strikingly, the state of intellectual property systems directly influences countries' overall development. Nations boasting robust IP frameworks tend to attract greater investment in research and development, enhance their innovation ecosystems, and improve access to pioneering health technologies. Conversely, Latin America continues to grapple with significant challenges. The
Biopharmaceutical Competitiveness and Investment Report (BCI 2025) indicates that the region's competitiveness hovers around an average of 59%, which lags behind powerhouse economies nearly by 20%.
The report highlights critical gaps, particularly in market access and the fortification of intellectual property protections, which hinder the region's growth trajectory. Raquel Sorza, FIFARMA's Director of Health Policy, articulated this concern, stating, "Talking about intellectual property in health is talking about the conditions to move forward. Where there are clear rules, there is more innovation, more investment, and better access for patients."
Despite these challenges, Latin America possesses a wealth of scientific talent, diversity, and burgeoning capabilities. By merging these strengths with the right conditions, groundbreaking innovations are not only possible but likely. Initiatives like the
Latam Health Champions, a program spearheaded by FIFARMA, vividly illustrate this potential in action. The 2026 edition of the project received an impressive 234 applications from 11 different countries, culminating in eight winning initiatives that will engage in a program aimed at strengthening their projects and connecting them with global innovation networks in Boston.
The message from FIFARMA on this World Intellectual Property Day is clear: innovation in health does not happen haphazardly; it flourishes when the right supporting conditions are established. As stakeholders in the health industry, it is imperative to recognize and reinforce these conditions to continue advancing health innovations that can substantially improve patient outcomes across Latin America.
