Okayama University Launches Second Phase of Okayama Tech Garage Project
In a groundbreaking initiative designed to foster student creativity and problem-solving, Okayama University recently announced the launch of the second phase of the "Okayama Tech Garage Project". This ambitious project, which took place on September 10, 2025, involves the selection of five student teams that will operate out of the KIBINOVE Co-Creation Innovation Lab located at the Tsushima Campus in Okayama City.
The Okayama Tech Garage serves as a flexible workspace where students are encouraged to experiment and take on challenges related to product development and societal issues. Established in 2024, this state-of-the-art facility boasts amenities including 3D printers, electronic development tools, high-performance PCs, and large displays—creating an ideal environment for innovative projects. Modeled after the University of Tokyo's "Hongo Tech Garage", this space is designed as a "secret base" for students passionate about hands-on learning and collaboration.
Teams selected for this phase of the project include:
1. Livestock Odor Control Team
2. Modular Cooperative Working Robot Development Team
3. Haruno Kuni Canal Safety Team
4. AI"KakerAI" for Classroom Output Based on Research Papers Team
5. Scientific Verification Team for Pasture-raised Pork Connecting Consumers and Producers
Each team will benefit from the use of the Tech Garage facilities, funding for prototype creation and user research, as well as mentorship from external experts and university professors. This multi-faceted support system is geared toward facilitating the practical implementation of their innovative ideas and tackling various societal challenges.
During the orientation held for the selected teams, participants shared insights on the goals of the Tech Garage, utilization methods, and their plans going forward, alongside networking opportunities that enabled students from diverse backgrounds to connect.
This initiative falls under the Cabinet Office's "Regional Core University Innovation Creation Environment Strengthening Project" and aims not only to nurture the next generation of talent capable of addressing local challenges but also to spur innovation stemming from the university. Okayama University, through its Startup and Venture Creation Headquarters, provides comprehensive support for commercializing research and business ideas, including goal-driven mentoring, funding acquisition, and operational advice.
For individuals interested in entrepreneurial activities or solving pressing social issues, outreach is encouraged, and prospective innovators are invited to engage with the university's resources. As Okayama University continues to define itself as a unique research institution at the forefront of local and global innovation, the community looks forward to the positive impact generated by these student-led projects.
The facilities at KIBINOVE—home to cutting-edge technology and collaborative workspace—promise to be a launchpad for the next generation of innovators.
