Digital Dynamic Partners for AI Data Center Development in Futaba
Digital Dynamic Co., Ltd. has officially announced its collaboration with Japan Asia Investment Co. (JAIC) in building a decentralized AI data center in Futaba, Fukushima. The company’s new venture, JAIC Data Dynamics, was established with the aim of advancing Japan's digital infrastructure by decentralizing data processing capabilities from urban centers to rural areas. This initiative has recently been approved for funding by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) as part of its fifth regional economic impact support project, which supports employment creation and community revitalization.
Supporting a New Era of AI
The need for effective infrastructure in the era of generative AI is paramount. To this end, Digital Dynamic envisions a decentralized AI data center designed to enhance the resilience and efficiency of digital services across Japan. Centralizing data centers in metropolitan areas poses risks in cases of network outages or large-scale disasters. The new facility in Futaba will feature up to 100 high-performance GPU servers, equipped with NVIDIA’s B200, providing essential resources for tasks involving generative AI and large-scale data processing.
Project Details and Goals
Digital Dynamic is committed to investing ¥30 billion in this project, which includes a request for supplementary funding. The project’s first phase includes organizing a setup of 2 MW energy supply for the data center, paving the way for significant local job creation and sustainable economic growth. Emphasizing the commitment to environmental awareness, the project seeks to synergize economic development with strategies to reduce ecological footprints.
The support from METI via the fifth regional economic impact support program is crucial, as it will cover part of the operational costs as the project moves forward. With the center expected to begin operation by December 2026, the initial financing will supplement what JAIC Data Dynamics plans to raise independently, which includes up to ¥300 million from the Japan Asia Investment Group.
Strategic Plans for Development
Digital Dynamic’s overarching objective is to build a collaborative network of decentralized AI learning and inference data centers throughout Japan. By establishing smaller facilities in rural areas, the company aims to reduce the infrastructural burden on large urban data centers and promote equitable access to AI technology across the country. The strategy also focuses on optimizing the geographical placement of data centers in regions with abundant electricity supply, particularly those near nuclear power stations or landing points for undersea cables.
The company's expansion goals also envision developing facilities capable of supplying over 10 MW of power, an essential threshold for supporting advanced data processing operations. The first step involves the construction of a 4 MW facility with plans for future expansions that could reach 50 MW.
Furthermore, the total investment plans indicate a commitment of ¥100 billion initially, with long-term aspirations potentially encompassing up to ¥1 trillion over the course of the project.
