Bybit Pay Launches Cryptocurrency QR Payments in South Africa Through MoneyBadger

Bybit Pay Expands to South Africa

In a landmark move for cryptocurrency adoption, Bybit, the world's second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has launched its payment solution, Bybit Pay, in South Africa. This expansion is realized through a strategic partnership with MoneyBadger, a South African payment integration provider that facilitates QR code-based transactions and enables settlements in South African Rands. This integration aims to simplify the usage of cryptocurrencies for everyday purchases across a wide network of merchants.

The Rise of Crypto Payments

As one of the most dynamic digital asset markets in Africa, South Africa boasts an estimated cryptocurrency ownership rate of 9.44%. This statistic translates to around 5.8 million individuals, with approximately 52% utilizing cryptocurrencies for their transactions as per estimates from Triple-A in 2024. The collaboration between Bybit and MoneyBadger represents a crucial step in promoting the utilization of cryptocurrencies for daily operations.

Bybit Pay allows users in South Africa to make transactions either by scanning QR codes or by processing payments online at affiliated merchants. This encompasses a diverse array of daily expenditures, such as groceries, fuel, travel, retail, and dining, enabling users to pay using Bitcoin, stablecoins, and over 20 supported digital assets.

Extensive Merchant Network

Thanks to the partnership with MoneyBadger, Bybit Pay integrates into several well-established payment networks in South Africa. This means users can access over 650,000 points of sale through Scan to Pay, along with 31,000 points available via Zapper and over 1,500 Pick n Pay stores. Additional coverage is provided in-store and online through Peach, catering to 120 merchants, and Ozow, featuring more than 440 vendors.

This integration leverages the existing QR infrastructure, allowing retailers to receive payments in South African Rands through their current payment systems, without needing to hold cryptocurrencies or implement new payment solutions. MoneyBadger efficiently converts cryptocurrencies to Rand at the point of sale, thereby minimizing exposure to price volatility, a common concern when dealing with cryptocurrencies.

User Experience Made Easy

Payment processing through Bybit Pay is designed to be user-friendly. For in-store purchases, users simply need to open the Bybit app, navigate to Bybit Pay, scan a merchant's QR code, and confirm the transaction. When buying online, users select cryptocurrencies as their payment method at checkout, follow the procedures within the Bybit app, and confirm payment information.

To utilize the service, users must activate Bybit Pay within their app and complete identity verification requirements. There are no transaction fees for QR payments, making it an economically sensible choice for users. Payment limits range from $0.06 to $2,500 per transaction, with most operations completed within 10 to 15 seconds.

Bybit's Global Impact

Bybit serves over 80 million users worldwide and has enabled deposits in South African Rands, further solidifying its presence in the region. According to the World Crypto Rankings 2025 report, South Africa ranks among the top global cryptocurrency markets, influenced by active cryptocurrency usage for payments and daily financial activities. This landscape reflects a broader trend toward real-world utility of digital currencies, signaling a shift away from mere trading speculation.

Sophie Chen, marketing head at Bybit Card and Bybit Pay, remarked, "Cryptocurrency payments are entering a new phase, focusing more on real-world utility rather than trading alone. Bybit Pay connects digital assets with daily commerce, and our collaboration with MoneyBadger ensures a seamless shopping experience across South Africa."

Echoing this sentiment, Carel van Wyk, CEO of MoneyBadger, stated, "Our mission is to make Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency payments as effortless as scanning a QR code. With Bybit Pay now available on our network, millions of users can easily shop with cryptocurrencies at local merchants while vendors continue to receive Rand settlements."

The partnership aims to boost the adoption of cryptocurrency payments in South Africa, with future initiatives encouraging participating merchants to embrace digital currencies as a viable payment option. This evolution marks a significant milestone in integrating cryptocurrencies into everyday commerce within the region.
