UMass Lowell Field Hockey Embraces New AstroTurf® Field
The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) field hockey team is poised to embark on a new era, marking significant advancements in athletic facilities with the installation of a cutting-edge AstroTurf® field. This state-of-the-art surface, which was completed over the summer, is designed specifically to enhance the quality of play, promoting speed, precision, and consistency—all hallmarks of successful field hockey.
Head Coach Shannon LeBlanc expressed enthusiasm about the transition from their previous Astro-12 field, stating, "For 12 years we loved our Astro-12 field, and when it came time to replace it, there was no question that we wanted to replicate the experience. Our team enjoys how fast and smooth the surface plays." The field also features unique inlaid text behind the goals, adding a vibrant touch to the already eye-catching blue color of the turf.
AstroTurf®, known for its quality and performance, designs its field hockey systems with the highest level of play in mind. The new surface guarantees a true and predictable ball roll, enabling UMass Lowell's athletes to execute complex strategies seamlessly at full speed. Quick decision-making and well-honed tactical gameplay are rewarded on this cutting-edge pitch, which aims to enhance the training and competition experience.
The excitement for the new field is palpable. Matthew Delmonte, the Assistant Athletic Director of Events Operations, stated, "We are thrilled with how our Astro-12 field came out. Between the blue color of the field and the inlaid text behind each goal, we could not be more pleased with the finishing touches." This upgrade not only reflects a commitment to enhancing performance but also signifies the university's intention to foster a supportive atmosphere for both players and the wider campus community.
The UMass Lowell field hockey team is also preparing to kick off its 50th season, with the first game taking place under the lights at the newly renovated Wicked Blue Field against Merrimack. Scheduled for Friday, August 29, 2025, this match promises to be an exciting opener as the team looks to build on its success from previous seasons. Last year, they achieved victories over two major Division I opponents and ranked well for the second consecutive season, showcasing their growing competitiveness on a national level.
The 2025 season is set to be challenging, as UMass Lowell faces teams from six different athletic conferences while competing in a 17-game schedule that includes ten home games and seven away games. Their opening weekend wraps up with a Kennedy Cup matchup against Massachusetts, promising a thrilling start to the season.
With the highly anticipated upgrades in place, UMass Lowell's field hockey program is committed to not just maintaining its reputation but enhancing it. As they prepare to welcome fans to a beautifully designed field that embodies both performance and school pride, the team aims for remarkable achievements on the competitive field ahead. The AstroTurf® installation reinforces UMass Lowell's ongoing tradition of excellence in collegiate sports, offering a world-class surface that elite athletes can trust.
