Okayama University Establishes Center for Rare Cancer Research and Treatment Innovation

Okayama University: A Pioneering Force in Rare Cancer Research

Okayama University, a national university located in Okayama City, has officially established a leading research center dedicated to treating refractory and rare cancers. On July 14, 2025, during the Next Generation Research Institute's operational council, the newly designated center for regenerative medicine, cellular therapies, and gene treatment was announced. This initiative is part of Okayama University's long-term vision to innovate and contribute to global challenges by enhancing research capabilities and fostering innovation.

The establishment of the center aligns with Okayama University's commitment to creating a thriving ecosystem for advanced research. This venture is also complemented by the launch of the Okayama University Advanced Research Institute in September 2023, which aims to cultivate excellence in research and innovation on a global scale. The Advanced Research Institute serves as the primary layer of research activities, while the Next Generation Research Institute, formerly known as the Global Frontier Interdisciplinary Research Organization (G Research Organization), acts as a secondary layer designed to enhance research collaborations and innovation flows.

The newly appointed center will utilize the strengths and findings from Okayama University's extensive research on brain tumors, as well as collaborative projects with esteemed institutions, including the National Institute of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition (AMED) and Harvard University. These collaborations will facilitate integrative analyses across various cancer types and develop universal treatment strategies that transcend specific cancer species, aiming to position the center as a globally renowned hub for cutting-edge cancer research.

Professor Masato Tanaka, head of the center, expressed his excitement regarding this designation: “We are honored to be recognized as a Next Generation Research Group. Our long-standing commitment to brain tumor research has yielded groundbreaking results. This designation will enable us to establish innovative treatment frameworks that can provide hope to patients suffering from refractory and rare cancers. We also aim to nurture the next generation of researchers, making Okayama University a world-class hub for regenerative medicine and gene therapies.”

In December 2023, Okayama University received approval from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for its J-PEAKS project, signifying its commitment to strengthening its identity as a regional core research university. This strategic initiative involves executing institutional reforms to elevate the organization beyond conventional boundaries and ensure continued contribution to national and global research landscapes. The Next Generation Research Institute marks a significant step in this ambitious direction.

President Yasutaka Nasu emphasized the transformative nature of this initiative: “The Next Generation Research Group is part of a pioneering system that no other university has implemented. While we anticipate some challenges along the way, we view these as valuable learning opportunities. I encourage Professor Tanaka and his team to leverage their past successes and make remarkable advancements in their research initiatives.”

Moreover, the university is dedicated to maintaining a vibrant academic atmosphere that supports both established strengths and innovative perspectives. Sato Nohito, Vice President and director of the Next Generation Research Institute, noted, “The diverse proposals submitted during our internal call for this initiative showcased incredible creativity. Our objective is to support not only selected projects but also those proposals that were just shy of being recognized.”

As a research-intensive university, Okayama University is committed to utilizing research to improve medical practices, foster education, engage in regional activities, strengthen international collaborations, and drive societal change. All these efforts are guided by its long-term vision for 2025.

The establishment of the Center for Research and Treatment of Rare and Refractory Cancers is just the beginning. As Okayama University continues its upward trajectory, it invites stakeholders, both locally and globally, to witness its growth and impact in advancing medical science.
