Raising Awareness This September
From September 15 to 21, 2025, the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN) will shine a spotlight on what they call a critical issue: diaper need. Surprisingly, nearly 50% of families with infants in the United States are challenged by the inability to afford sufficient diapers for their young children. This staggering number is not just an economic statistic; it reflects a pressing public health issue that affects the lives of countless families across the nation.
Understanding Diaper Need
Diapers are fundamental to a child's health and well-being. Without them, babies face increased risks for infections and diseases. Moreover, the inability to provide clean diapers can lead to exclusion from childcare facilities, leaving parents stranded without work opportunities. Research by NDBN shows that access to diapers promotes better health outcomes, supports maternal mental health, and ultimately helps families break the cycle of poverty.
Engage and Support
As part of National Diaper Need Awareness Week, NDBN calls on individuals, groups, and businesses to get involved. Volunteering at local diaper banks offers a chance to make a direct impact in the community. These organizations are eager for assistance, evidenced by the involvement of over 214,000 volunteers who contributed more than 1.2 million hours of service last year alone. A single hour spent packaging diapers, organizing fundraisers, or developing social media strategies can change a family's life.
For those unable to volunteer, donating funds or diapers to local banks can provide immediate relief. Communities are encouraged to participate in diaper drives or host fundraisers specifically targeting the need for diaper supplies. The message is simple: if everyone does their part, we can eliminate diaper insecurity.
Events and Awareness Efforts
During this important week, diaper banks nationwide will host a variety of events, including policy discussions and diaper drives. Local proclamations from mayors and governors will further raise awareness, urging residents to confront and diminish this pressing issue. The collective effort marks a significant milestone in tackling diaper need, as each action contributes to a larger movement that has been gaining momentum over the last two decades.
New Tools for Change
A groundbreaking initiative launching in September is the Diaper Insecurity Dashboard, in partnership with Urban Institute. This first-of-its-kind tool will provide comprehensive data analysis of diaper needs across the U.S., allowing lawmakers and agencies to create targeted interventions based on evidence rather than assumptions.
Join the Movement
Joanne Samuel Goldblum, CEO of NDBN, emphasizes the growing urgency to address diaper need: “Engaging more volunteers and advocating for policy change is vital to eradicating diaper need in America. This isn’t just a grassroots movement; it’s a national call to action.” The hope is that as communities rally around this issue, diaper need will become a discussion point that leads to long-lasting change.
