New 2027 SDPWS Standard Enhances Seismic and Wind Design Tools

Enhanced Design Provisions in 2027 SDPWS Standard

The American Wood Council (AWC) has made a significant advancement in building standards by publishing the 2027 edition of the Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (ANSI/AWC SDPWS-2027). This newly updated edition presents two innovative construction systems and revised provisions for Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) diaphragms, specifically aimed at improving safety and structural integrity in regions prone to seismic and wind challenges.

A Major Milestone in Structural Design

Approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the 2027 SDPWS has undergone an extensive development process over five years, culminating in a rigorous consensus-driven voting mechanism that ensured broad input and validation from industry experts. Spanning 13 rounds of voting and a comprehensive public review period, this standard reflects a collaborative effort aimed at aligning engineering practices with the very latest research findings and building technologies.

Brad Douglas, Vice President of Engineering at AWC, emphasized the importance of this updated standard, stating, “This edition of SDPWS gives engineers research-based and tested tools to design with confidence in the highest-hazard regions of the country.” With the inclusion of new systems, engineers have enhanced capabilities to utilize wood effectively while meeting performance requirements in critical seismic and wind situations.

What’s New in the 2027 SDPWS

Among the exciting new features in the revised standard are the Post-Tensioned Timber Rocking Wall and a new sheathed wood-frame High-Capacity One-Sided Shear Wall system. These additions offer designers greater flexibility in wood construction, thus facilitating the use of wood materials in areas that historically posed significant engineering challenges.

Moreover, the new design provisions for CLT diaphragms have been revised based on new full-size testing data. This is notable, as the research findings are now being leveraged to support revised seismic design force reduction factors for CLT diaphragms in accordance with ASCE 7-28 guidelines. Therefore, engineers and designers can reference the latest scientific data in their projects, ensuring that their designs not only meet but exceed contemporary safety standards.

Continued Commitment to Wood Innovation

Looking to the future, AWC is actively working on additional updates, including revisions to the Permanent Wood Foundation Design Specification (PWF) and the 2024 National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS), alongside the 2024 Fire Design Specification for Wood Construction and the Wood-Frame Construction Manual for One- and Two-Family Dwellings.

The 2027 SDPWS is currently available for online viewing, and it will be formally available for purchase in early 2027.

ACW stands as a leading authority in the structural wood products industry, representing 87.5% of its market share and contributing to approximately 465,000 jobs across the nation. By championing the evolution of standards, technology, and data concerning wood products, AWC ensures their practical utilization while simultaneously promoting sustainability and carbon reduction benefits associated with wood.
