Special Exhibition at the Ancient Orient Museum: A Journey from the Ancient Orient to Iwami Silver Mine

Special Exhibition: From the Ancient Orient to Iwami Silver Mine

The Ancient Orient Museum, located in Sunshine City, Ikebukuro, Tokyo, is hosting a special autumn exhibition titled "From the Ancient Orient to Iwami Silver Mine - The World Driven by Silver", from September 19 to December 6, 2026. This exhibition commemorates two significant milestones: the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Iwami Silver Mine and the 20th anniversary of its registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Historical Significance of Silver

Human history witnessed monumental changes with the advent of metals. Precious metals like gold and silver captivated people with their beauty and luminescence, eventually becoming symbols of wealth and power. Meanwhile, copper and iron supported the development of civilization as tools and weapons. Among these, silver evolved from a measure of value to currency and became a vital connector between distant regions. During the Age of Exploration, the production of large quantities of silver, particularly from the Iwami Silver Mine in Oda City, Shimane Prefecture, played an essential role in global economic activities.

As we approach 2027, which marks the 500th discovery anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the Iwami Silver Mine’s inclusion in the World Heritage list, this exhibition will present an intricate narrative of how silver intertwined with humanity throughout history. It is part of three exhibitions spread across Tokyo, Izumo, and Oda in celebration of these historical milestones. Visitors will explore ancient artifacts, silver vessels, a variety of coins, and relevant materials from the Iwami region, tracing the path of how silver has connected people and shaped the world.
