Electrified Thermal Solutions Partners with Holcim for Joule Hive Deployment in Industry
Electrified Thermal Solutions Partners with Holcim
Electrified Thermal Solutions, a prominent player in thermal energy storage and electric heating technologies, has recently formed an exciting partnership with Holcim, a global leader in providing building materials and solutions. This collaboration aims to deploy the innovative Joule Hive™ Thermal Battery (JHTB) as part of Holcim's ambitious electrification strategy, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions across its operations.
Cement production is notorious for its energy-intensive processes and high operational temperatures, often exceeding those achievable through conventional electric heating. As a result, many businesses have relied solely on combustion methods, which produce significant greenhouse gases. However, with this collaboration, both companies are set to break new ground in the decarbonization of high-temperature industrial practices.
The initial deployment plan includes two JHTB units that harness stored clean electricity, releasing heat at extreme temperatures—up to 1,800°C (3,275°F). This remarkable capability highlights the potential of electric heat in industrial applications previously thought unattainable by electric means. According to Ram Muthu, Head of Operational Excellence at Holcim, “Electrifying high-temperature industrial heat is one of the advanced technologies we are incorporating in our decarbonization strategy, and this deployment allows us to evaluate its potential.”
Transitioning to Electrification
Holcim's agreement with Electrified Thermal Solutions not only extends their existing collaboration but also solidifies Holcim's role as an investor in the company. This relationship is pivotal, especially as industries around the globe begin operating under stricter environmental guidelines. Daniel Stack, the CEO and co-founder of Electrified Thermal Solutions, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “Holcim's decision to deploy our technology validates years of work to bring electrified heat to high-temperature industrial-scale applications that no other technology can achieve.”
Electrified Thermal’s progressive Joule Hive™ technology is the result of over 12 years of intensive research at MIT, showcasing significant advancements in electric heating systems. With the capability to convert and store clean electricity as heat, this technology stands as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
As energy efficiency becomes a priority in various sectors, the global demand for innovative heating solutions pours in. Considering that industrial heat constitutes about 20% of the world's energy consumption, Electrified Thermal Solutions is stepping into a market that has long been resistant to electrification.
Commercial Path Forward
The agreement builds upon the momentum generated by the company’s commercial demonstration system located in San Antonio, Texas. This system was inaugurated earlier this year, representing Electrified Thermal’s entry into the megawatt-scale arena. Both Electrified Thermal and Holcim are keen to explore further applications of this advanced technology to cater to more of Holcim's operational needs.
This pioneering partnership illustrates a significant stride toward combating climate change, as industries begin to transition from fossil fuels to electrification. Holcim's electrification roadmap, alongside Electrified Thermal Solutions' innovative Joule Hive™, positions them as leaders in this necessary transformation. Moving forward, all eyes will be on this collaboration to see how it revolutionizes the industrial landscape by advancing sustainable practices while still meeting global demand.
