Join the Exciting Community BioBlitz at Muscle Shoals Trails and Discover Nature's Wonders
Discover Nature at the Community BioBlitz
The Tennessee River Valley Stewardship Council (TRVSC) is excited to invite families, students, scouts, and outdoor enthusiasts to participate in a unique community event known as a BioBlitz. Scheduled for June 12-13, 2026, at the Muscle Shoals Reservation Trails, this free event promises to be a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to engage with nature and learn about biodiversity right in their own backyard.
What to Expect at the BioBlitz
The BioBlitz will challenge participants to uncover as many plant and animal species as possible within a defined area. Attendees will employ their observation skills using smartphones and cameras to document local wildlife while gaining insights about the ecosystem around Wilson Dam. The event aims to create a treasure-hunt atmosphere, especially for children who will hunt for insects, identify various bird species, photograph wildflowers, and include their findings in a broader scientific record.
The adventure starts on Friday evening, running from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Participants are invited to embark on a nighttime walk along the Rockpile Trail. Equipped with black lights, they will have a chance to observe moths, beetles, glowing fireflies, and other nocturnal insects that typically stay hidden during daylight.
On Saturday morning, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., scheduled birdwatching sessions along with species recognition activities will take place on the Rockpile Trail. Attendees will be on the lookout for stunning local flora such as Indian pink, beebalm, woodland phlox, and coral honeysuckle, while also spotting butterflies, moths, and vibrant green beetles. This guided exploration will highlight the incredible diversity of life thriving throughout the lush forests, fields, and waterways of the reservation.
Jessica Stevens Raper, a TVA Support Representative in Environmental Stewardship, expressed the significance of the event by stating, "A BioBlitz gives kids the chance to ask questions, make discoveries, and contribute to real conservation science. Our hope is that families will leave with a renewed appreciation for the outdoors and a desire to continue exploring local trails."
The knowledge and skills developed during such experiential learning events are essential in fostering scientific curiosity among young people and enriching their understanding of their integral role in environmental protection. Julie Graham, a spokesperson for the TRV Stewardship Council, emphasized that firsthand experiences in nature are invaluable for inspiring future conservation leaders. She stated, "Whether a child encounters a rare wildflower, observes a new bird, or simply appreciates the environment better, such experiences can ignite a lasting passion for stewardship."
