June Marks National Cancer Survivor Month: CanCare Calls for Community Support for Patients

June Marks National Cancer Survivor Month

June is recognized as National Cancer Survivor Month, a time to reflect on and honor the strength of over 18 million cancer survivors across the United States. While the achievements of these individuals are commendable, a pressing question lies in the emotional aftermath of a cancer diagnosis: Who stands by patients as they navigate through treatment and beyond?

CanCare, a Houston-based nonprofit established 35 years ago, has been at the forefront of providing essential emotional and spiritual support tailored specifically for those impacted by cancer. Their comprehensive approach stands as a beacon of hope and encouragement during an often overwhelming period. With a robust network of trained volunteers, many of whom are cancer survivors or caregivers, CanCare ensures that no patient has to endure their journey alone. An empowering message from Darcie Wells, the President and CEO of CanCare, encapsulates their mission: “People need more than a prognosis. They need someone to walk beside them.”

During the 2024 year alone, CanCare made significant strides in patient outreach. The organization assisted over 11,500 patients and caregivers, completed more than 9,600 hospital visits, and welcomed 81 new volunteers into their ranks. Their influence stretches far and wide, boasting support networks in 43 states and five countries, providing help in more than 30 languages.

At the heart of CanCare's operations is a one-on-one matching program that pairs clients with volunteers who have similar experiences, whether through similar cancer types, caregiving roles, or personal life stories. Additionally, CanCare hosts professionally facilitated virtual support groups and offers in-person visits at over 20 healthcare facilities across the nation.

Dr. Candy Arentz, a volunteer and practicing breast surgical oncologist, emphasizes the unique value of CanCare's programs, stating, “Programs like CanCare offer a kind of healing no prescription can.” By connecting individuals who have walked a similar path, CanCare facilitates healing that transcends conventional medical treatments. The emotional challenges accompanying a cancer diagnosis are undeniably real, and support from someone who genuinely understands can be transformative.

In celebration of its 35th anniversary, CanCare has set an inspiring goal: to support 35,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients. This initiative will be bolstered through the sale and distribution of their Amazon #1 bestseller, Hope in the Face of Cancer, which features 55 inspiring stories from survivors, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Profits from the book will help fund volunteer training and expand CanCare’s reach to those in need.
