Hitachi Accelerates DX of Social Infrastructure Maintenance with Lumada-powered Solutions

In response to pressing societal challenges such as aging social infrastructure and workforce shortages, Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Systems, Ltd. have unveiled a systematic approach to social infrastructure maintenance under the banner "Social Infrastructure Maintenance powered by Lumada." This initiative will effectively address key concerns regarding the maintenance of essential services such as electricity, gas, roads, bridges, tunnels, and water supply through tailored solutions. Starting February 26, Hitachi aims to leverage its extensive experience from over 450 clients across the nation and a portfolio of more than 40 solutions to create adaptable proposals across various fields of maintenance.

The current state of infrastructure in Japan reflects a significant deterioration, especially among structures established during the period of rapid economic growth. Incidents such as bursting water pipes and road collapses are increasingly common, causing severe disruptions to everyday life. Reports indicate that road subsidence incidents alone have surpassed 10,000 annually. Projections suggest that the proportion of infrastructure exceeding 50 years of age will dramatically increase over the next two decades. The consequent rise in maintenance costs, coupled with a decrease in skilled technicians due to demographic aging, underscores the urgent need for initiatives that prioritize the sustainable upkeep of public utilities.

Recognizing the critical necessity for proactive measures amidst escalating natural disasters, the imperative for the "Resilience of National Land" reinforces the need for planned infrastructure renewal and streamlined maintenance operations. Historically, Hitachi has supported a wide range of social infrastructures through the integration of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT), aiming to enhance field safety and operational efficiency through remote monitoring, predictive diagnostics, and data analysis solutions.

The current endeavor seeks to consolidate the various existing solutions related to social infrastructure maintenance, previously offered on an individual basis. This systematic structuring allows for cohesive combinations of services tailored to customer challenges, organized into five major categories: management & planning, monitoring & detection, analysis & diagnostics, maintenance & operational support, and defense & control.

Additionally, Hitachi is establishing a specialized team dedicated to social infrastructure maintenance. This team will unify technical knowledge within the Hitachi Group and facilitate collaboration across departments, ensuring comprehensive support throughout the business lifecycle—from conceptual development to operational upkeep. Their responsibilities include identifying latent customer issues, proposing appropriate solution combinations through aggregated resources, and organizing professional teams to address specific sector challenges after solution implementation.

For instance, when conducting inspections of dams, drones can autonomously gather detailed imagery of structural walls. An advanced AI system can then analyze the collected images and automatically flag potential issues such as cracks or water leaks. The identified areas are accurately mapped onto a 3D model of the structure, allowing managers to intuitively assess deterioration and plan effective remediation strategies.

This initiative is foundational to Hitachi’s vision for next-generation social infrastructure maintenance, continuously evolving its offerings under "Social Infrastructure Maintenance powered by Lumada." The aspiration is to progress towards "HMAX by Hitachi," a generational leap in maintenance operations incorporating advanced predictive analysis, autonomous operations, and data assurance, all facilitated by a comprehensive system that harnesses various sensing data and historical incident records.

Through this strategy, Hitachi embodies its commitment to enhancing social infrastructure maintenance while contributing to regional safety and security and promoting sustainable societal frameworks. The goal is to realize a "Harmonized Society" where environmental sustainability, societal welfare, and economic growth coexist harmoniously.

This structured approach also includes promoting awareness about the services and solutions central to the "Social Infrastructure Maintenance powered by Lumada" initiative, which you can explore further at Hitachi’s dedicated web page. By comprehensively addressing client concerns through innovative, integrated solutions, Hitachi strives to not only aid in immediate infrastructure challenges but also pave the way toward a sustainable future for public utilities, ensuring that they remain functional and resilient for generations to come.
