Recent research led by Seoul National University of Science and Technology has uncovered the potential benefits of perilla oil for cardiovascular health. Perilla oil, prevalent in East Asian cuisine, is rich in α-linolenic acid (ALA), a crucial omega-3 fatty acid known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Despite its traditional uses, the specific cardiovascular benefits of perilla oil have not been extensively studied until now.

Understanding Perilla Oil


Perilla frutescens, the plant from which perilla oil is derived, has been used for centuries not only as a culinary ingredient but also in traditional medicine. The oil is made by extracting the seeds of the perilla plant, which consists of roughly 70% ALA. This high concentration of ALA aligns with the ongoing search for effective dietary interventions to combat cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which remain one of the leading causes of death globally and in South Korea.

The Study: Design and Findings


The groundbreaking study was led by Professor Ji Yeon Kim, who along with her research team, identified a group of 65 healthy smokers aged between 19 to 69. Smokers were chosen due to their increased risk of cardiovascular incidents. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, participants were separated randomly to receive either perilla oil capsules—three capsules twice daily—or placebo for a duration of eight weeks.

Post-intervention assessments provided significant insights into how perilla oil influences blood coagulation and inflammation. The results showed a notable prolongation of collagen-induced ADP closure time (C-ADP CT), indicating that the oil enhanced platelet function. Additionally, the study demonstrated a decrease in inflammatory markers such as TNF-α and TBX21 in participants who consumed perilla oil. Not only did their plasma levels of ALA and its metabolites rise, but the increase of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in red blood cells was associated with improved blood coagulation.

Implications for Health


Professor Kim noted, "While perilla oil has long been an integral part of Korean food culture, its potential cardiovascular benefits have not been fully recognized. Our research demonstrates these benefits and shows how perilla oil can support cardiovascular health and improve blood circulation." Notably, participants reported these benefits without any major side effects, making perilla oil an appealing dietary option.

Despite the promising findings, the study also acknowledged limitations regarding the short duration of supplementation. Participants did not show significant changes under conditions of metabolic stress, such as in a high-fat, high-glucose loading test, suggesting that longer-term studies may be warranted to fully understand the effects of perilla oil.

A Vegan Alternative for Cardiovascular Health


Perilla oil stands out as a vegan-friendly alternative to fish oil, which is commonly recommended for omega-3 supplementation. Individuals looking for effective means to maintain vascular health may find perilla oil an accessible and healthful addition to their diet. The potential to reduce inflammation and enhance blood flow provides new avenues for dietary interventions against CVD.
