Imposing Peace Monument Donated to Sakuragawa City After Expo2025 in Osaka

A Symbol of Global Peace: The Peace Monument in Sakuragawa City

Sakuragawa City, located in Ibaraki Prefecture, has recently welcomed a monumental gift that embodies the spirit of global peace. The impressive stone sculpture, known as the "Peace Monument", created by renowned Bulgarian sculptor Ivan Stoyanov, was officially donated to the city after its display at the Bulgaria Pavilion during Expo2025 in Osaka. The unveiling ceremony took place on March 17, 2026, at the North Park near Yamato Station, marking a significant moment for the community.

Unveiling Ceremony Details

The ceremony commenced at 10 AM, gathering locals and officials eager to witness the return of the 2.8-meter tall, 6.8-ton masterpiece. Among the attendees was Sakuragawa's Mayor, Hideki Otsuka, who expressed profound joy at the monument's arrival. He noted, "It feels like fate that this statue, which I saw during the Expo's opening, has returned to our land. It will continue to pray for peace from this very site."

A Month of Collaboration and Creation

In October 2024, Ivan Stoyanov settled in Sakuragawa for approximately a month to create the monument. Using the region's own "Yasato Mica Granite", recognized as a Heritage Stone by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), Stoyanov's artistic process involved carving detailed messages of peace.

During his residency, Stoyanov conducted a stone-processing workshop where participants carved the English phrase, "We sincerely hope that the World will be at peace forever," into stone slates. These inscriptions were then incorporated into the base of the monument itself, making it not just a sculpture but a collaborative artwork symbolizing cross-border cultural exchange in stone arts.

A Message to the World

Once completed, the Peace Monument was displayed at the Bulgaria Pavilion of Expo2025, where it represented the artistic bond between Japan and Bulgaria. The monument stands as a powerful message to visitors from all walks of life, advocating for lasting global harmony through the medium of stone.

The incorporation of contributions from local participants underscores the essence of shared dreams and aspirations for peace, captivating the hearts of many.

The Role of JP Stone Industries Association

The Japan Stone Industries Association, founded in 2001, played a crucial role in this initiative. The organization encompasses over 1,034 members nationwide, including quarrying, stone processing, and architectural stone industries, advocating for the advancement of the stone industry and cultural development. The association aims to promote the healthy growth of the industry while contributing positively to society.

With the establishment of the Peace Monument in Sakuragawa City, the hope is that this enduring symbol will continue to inspire future generations towards a more peaceful world.

As global citizens, the collective aspirations for peace are more vital than ever, and the Peace Monument stands testament to these unwavering desires.
