Sumitomo Forestry’s Remarkable Achievements at the International Skills Olympics

In a significant accomplishment for Sumitomo Forestry Engineering, two employees have proudly represented Japan at the 48th International Skills Olympics held in Shanghai, China, earning commendations for their exceptional skills in their respective fields. The event took place from September 22 to 27, 2023, with over 1,400 competitors from more than 70 countries participating in 64 disciplines aimed at promoting youth craftsmanship globally.

Talented Representatives

Kousuke Inagaki and Toi Mizoe, representing the company, were awarded the Courageous Award (敢闘賞) in their respective categories: carpentry and plastering. Inagaki has a proven track record, having claimed the gold medal in carpentry at the 63rd National Skills Competition held in Aichi Prefecture last year, where he outperformed 66 other participants. Mizoe, on the other hand, earned a bronze medal in plastering, securing his qualification for this international competition. This was the seventh time Japan participated in the carpentry category and the second for the plastering category.

The Skills Olympics, organized every two years, aims to enhance vocational training and promote international exchanges among young artisans under the age of 22, with some categories allowing participants up to 25 years old. The event not only tests the skills of these young talents but also fosters a spirit of cooperation and cultural exchange among nations.

A Legacy of Excellence

The Sumitomo Forestry Group has a commendable history in these competitions. Prior to this event, they had participated in the international competition six times in the carpentry category, earning two silver medals and three Courageous Awards. Domestically, they have consistently performed well, with 25 consecutive years of recognition in national competitions. Since its inception, approximately 1,900 individuals have completed their training programs, contributing effectively to constructing homes under the Sumitomo Forestry brand. The curriculum emphasizes a balanced approach incorporating mind, technique, and physical ability, equipping students with essential knowledge and skills pertinent to construction.

Addressing the acute shortage and aging workforce within Japan's construction sector, Sumitomo Forestry is committed to fostering professionals skilled in traditional wooden frame methods as well as advanced construction techniques. In 2026, the school intends to accept 88 new entrants, demonstrating a continuous expansion in its training program.
