Explore Hino Waterway: A Unique Summer Experience for Families
This summer, families are invited to dive into the wonders of the Hino Waterway during an exciting event organized by the
Hino-juku Discovery Team. Scheduled for
July 19th, this event will be held in front of the
Shintokoji Community Center from
9 AM to 11 AM, promising an engaging morning for children and parents alike.
The Hino Waterway has a rich history, dating back to
1567, even before the Edo period. This ancient aqueduct draws its waters from the
Tamagawa River and has sustained local agriculture for over 455 years, earning it the name "
The Rice Storehouse of Tama". The resourcefulness of Hino, which supported the financial needs of groups like the
Shinsengumi during the
Boshin War, highlights its importance in regional history.
Although the number of rice paddies has dwindled over the years, this beautiful waterway continues to serve as a recreational area for both wildlife and local residents. On site, one may even catch a glimpse of
sweetfish as they swim gracefully through the waters. To preserve the beauty and historical significance of Hino, the
Hino-juku Discovery Team aims to encourage families to recognize and appreciate the importance of their hometown.
During this event, children will have the opportunity to catch fish and insects in the waterway alongside their parents, guided by team members who will enhance their exploration experience. They will learn to identify various species using guides found at the local library, enriching their understanding of the ecosystem that surrounds them. This immersive experience brings families closer to nature while instilling a sense of pride in their community.
In recent years, this event has gained popularity, with many families expressing interest in participating. The initiative by the Hino-juku Discovery Team focuses on unveiling the hidden treasures of Hino while promoting its charm to current and future generations.
Spaces are limited for this popular gathering, with only the
first ten pairs of children and parents eligible to participate. As such, early registration is highly encouraged to ensure a spot at this educational and fun-filled event.
