New Large Handkerchief Collection Inspired by Yokohama's Zoos
On August 11th, MUJI, operated by Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., will launch a new collection of large handkerchiefs inspired by the animals from three zoos located in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. This is a continuation of the successful initiative that began last year, with a portion of the sales proceeds being donated to support the Animal Parent program of local zoos.
Established in 2021, the community business division of Ryohin Keikaku aims to address regional issues through collaboration with local businesses and government. A partnership was formed with Yokohama City to improve local living conditions and tackle community challenges. This handkerchief initiative is part of that ongoing commitment, designed to engage the community while raising awareness of local wildlife.
This year's design focuses on the Yokohama Zoo’s beloved inhabitants, including the newly featured babies of koalas, polar bears, and okapis, represented in the new Horizon Green color. The color draws inspiration from the deep forests, rich seas, and beautiful coral reefs, evoking the grandeur of nature while promoting awareness of important themes such as parenting and environmental issues.
The large size of these handkerchiefs is strategic; they can serve multiple purposes, such as providing a seat in outdoor settings or acting as a face covering in emergencies. MUJI has also been proactive in conducting food drives and disaster preparedness events at their Yokohama locations as part of their community outreach.
In conjunction with the handkerchief launch, there will be related events focusing on the lifestyles of the depicted animals. These will include talks by staff from the Yokohama Zoo and a workshop led by MUJI staff, allowing families to gain deeper insights into the animals’ environments and engage in creative activities.
Animal Parent Program: This initiative encourages the community to understand and appreciate their local zoos better. It helps provide better living conditions for animals at the Yokohama Zoo, Zoorasia, Nogeyama Zoo, and Kanazawa Zoo. Monies raised through this program are used for food, enrichment, and improving exhibits.
