JTB Unveils Vision 2030 for Inbound Tourism



In a significant move aimed at boosting inbound tourism, JTB Corporation has announced its strategy titled "Inbound Tourism Vision 2030." This initiative seeks not only to enhance Japan's inbound tourism market but also to establish Japan as a sustainable tourism destination. The strategy emphasizes regional collaboration and the strategic use of data, aiming to create sustainable tourism environments across various locations in Japan.

Objectives of the Vision


The core of the Vision 2030 strategy revolves around leveraging regional tourism resources and developing systems and content that are conscious of environmental, social, and economic factors. A key component of this initiative is the launch of the "JTB Tourism HUB," a data-driven platform anticipated to commence full operations by 2026. This platform will serve as a hub for data analytics and collaboration among stakeholders to create attractive experiences for inbound travelers.

Challenges in the Current Landscape


The backdrop to this strategy is the Japanese government’s basic plan for tourism, which sets ambitious goals for 2030, aiming for 60 million inbound travelers and 15 trillion yen in tourism spending. Currently, the inbound tourism market in Japan is projected to exceed 8 trillion yen in 2024, suggesting significant growth potential, especially when compared to other leading tourist nations in Europe.

Local governments, tourism operators, and accommodation providers face critical challenges in improving the reception environment for inbound travelers. Addressing these issues is vital for the overall growth of the inbound tourism sector. Moreover, problems such as overtourism in popular regions and increasing environmental burdens necessitate urgent solutions to improve the visitor experience. The expectation is that by 2025, inbound travelers will surpass 20 million in record time, emphasizing the importance of managing how these travelers explore different regions, aligning their experiences with local attractions and services.

Key Elements of Vision 2030


To invigorate Japan's inbound tourism sector, JTB plans to implement three major reforms supported by an enhanced data infrastructure.

Strategic Business Domains


JTB's strategic approach includes defining six existing business domains along with an additional new domain, streamlining operations across the organization. This clarity aims to foster a collaborative environment in which regional strategies can be co-developed and executed effectively, ensuring travelers are aware of and engaged with these initiatives.

Enhanced Investment for Solutions


JTB is strengthening its organizational capacity to better address the needs of local regions. New inbound tourism promotion centers are being established throughout the country, including in major areas like Hokkaido, Sendai, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Okinawa, thereby enhancing local collaboration and ensuring that regional issues are effectively met.

Creation of Compelling Services and Content


The Vision aims to develop new services and content that will entice travelers to visit Japan. Partnerships will be pursued to explore innovative ventures, such as collaborations for promoting nightlife experiences or unique cultural offerings. For example, JTB has signed a strategic partnership with Asobisystem Inc. to create new experiences centered around the popular Kawaii Monster Cafe.

Development of a Comprehensive Data Platform


A cornerstone of JTB’s strategy is the establishment of the "JTB Tourism HUB" that will enhance operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making for tourism stakeholders. This platform will facilitate the gathering and analysis of critical data, allowing for a refined understanding of the tourism landscape, which benefits not just JTB but also local governments and businesses seeking to improve their offerings.
