A Historical Reflection
The narrative focuses on the
Chosei Coal Mine Water Disaster that occurred in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1942, where 183 lives were lost, many of whom were miners from the Korean Peninsula. Shinjuku Liang Shanbo aims to revive the haunting whispers from beneath the sea, weaving a fantastical atmosphere unique to underground theater, while engaging the audience in a poignant reflection of history and its ongoing legacy.
Their commitment to honoring this tragic event has garnered them the
59th Kinokuniya Theater Award (Group Award) and the
32nd Yomiuri Theater Award (Best Production). The theater group takes a bold approach, creating a passionate and impactful piece that seeks to connect the past with the future through art.
Cultural Integration
Incorporating elements of
Korean dance and traditional
Korean instruments, the production transcends historical and geographical boundaries, presenting a heartfelt prayer and a commemoration of the souls lost that night. This deeply moving rendition promises to touch the hearts of all who attend.
