Gécamines Makes Strategic Move by Purchasing 100,000 Tons of Copper for U.S. Market

Strategic Acquisition by Gécamines

In a significant move for both Gécamines and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the company has exercised its right to purchase 100,000 tons of copper produced at the Tenke Fungurume mine for the upcoming year. This acquisition, which represents 20% of the total output from Tenke Fungurume in 2026, is seen as a crucial step toward bolstering the national economy and positioning the DRC more favorably in global raw material markets.

The announcement, made on January 12, 2026, followed a market consultation at the end of 2025 and underlines the ongoing partnership between Gécamines and Tenke Fungurume, a move that is expected to enhance local market control. "This transaction is a testament to our commitment to securing a sustainable revenue stream and promoting Congolese products globally," stated Guy-Robert Lukama, Chairman of Gécamines SA.

A New Era for DRC's Mining Sector

Historically, the marketing of metals from the DRC has been dominated by foreign entities, limiting the country's ability to optimize its natural resources. The recent actions by Gécamines mark a strategic turning point in the nation's approach to its mineral wealth. By taking charge of its marketing strategy, the DRC aims to reclaim sovereignty over its subsoil resources and reintegrate into the global value chain.

The successful marketing strategy that began in 2023 allows Gécamines to diversify its buyer base and increase its economic tax base. “We are paving the way for new opportunities and setting the stage for future sales of up to 500,000 tons of copper and 40,000 tons of cobalt,” said Placide Nkala Basadilua, CEO of Gécamines SA.

Gécamines Trading: A Vision of the Future

In line with these ambitious goals, Gécamines has launched Gécamines Trading, a fully-owned subsidiary aimed at maximizing the value of the country's mineral production. This initiative not only enables the company to purchase a share of its partnerships’ production but also gives it the capabilities to sell internationally.

Recognizing the intense competition in the global market for raw materials, Gécamines has teamed up with Mercuria, a leading commodity trading group, to facilitate this transition. Mercuria offers the financial and logistical expertise necessary to ensure Gécamines can effectively navigate international markets.

A Commitment to Transparency and Sovereignty

The formation of Gécamines Trading is described by Lukama as a vital instrument of sovereignty and transparency that aims to enhance the use of natural resources for the benefit of the Congolese people. By directly engaging in commodity trading, Gécamines is expected to not only increase its revenue but also contribute positively to local communities and the national economy as a whole.

This strategic direction underscores Gécamines' commitment to lever its position as a leading player in the raw materials market while ensuring that the benefits of its operations resonate throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. As the landscape of copper trading evolves, Gécamines’ proactive initiatives signal a robust and promising future for the DRC’s mining sector, fostering economic independence and a more substantial presence in global markets.
