Celebrating a Decade of Local Control at Ontario International Airport
This month, Ontario International Airport (ONT) proudly initiates a year-long festivity to mark a significant milestone: ten years since its return to local governance. The theme, "Reclaimed. Revived. Ready," underscores the airport's transformation over the decade, significantly impacting the Inland Empire's prominence within Southern California’s aviation and economic sectors.
The airport's noteworthy transition from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) on November 1, 2016, has revitalized its operations and passenger engagement. Prior to this change, ONT was struggling, but local leadership took bold steps to reinvigorate its potential. Alan D. Wapner, the President of the OIAA Board, states, “Today, ONT thrives as a vital economic engine for the Inland Empire and a source of regional pride.”
Over the past decade, Ontario International Airport has emerged as one of the fastest-growing airports in the U.S. With a remarkable 70% increase in passenger volume, ONT now accommodates over 7 million travelers annually, offering nonstop flights to destinations within the U.S., Mexico, Central America, and Asia.
The year-long celebration will involve various community events and initiatives designed to foster engagement and share the airport’s evolution, including:
- - Community Pop-Up Celebrations: Hosting events throughout the region to connect with residents and travelers alike.
- - Monthly Terminal Events: Organizing special activities within the airport to enhance the passenger experience.
- - Collaborations with Local Businesses and Artists: Working together with local stakeholders to showcase regional talents and products.
A dedicated webpage,

Additionally, ONT has launched "ONTo the Next Destination," its official blog, featuring travel tips, vacation ideas, and updates about ongoing developments at the airport.
Atif Elkadi, the CEO of OIAA, remarked, “Since gaining local control, our focus has been on constructing an airport that genuinely serves our community.” The airport has become more than just a transportation hub; it stands as a testament to Southern California’s growth, resilience, and optimistic future.
San Bernardino County Supervisor and OIAA Vice President Curt Hagman affirmed the success of this local governance model, emphasizing how it represents what can be achieved when a community stands united. “ONT’s return to local control is one of the Inland Empire's great success stories,” he stated.
