Three Paper Container Products from Toyo Seikan Group Win at 2025 Japan Packaging Contest

Toyo Seikan Group Achievements at the 2025 Japan Packaging Contest

In a remarkable display of innovation and sustainability, the Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, along with its subsidiaries Toyo Kankyo Co. and Nippon Tokan Package Co., achieved significant recognition at the prestigious 2025 Japan Packaging Contest, organized by the Japan Packaging Technology Association. The contest, celebrated for its focus on packaging excellence, saw the Group secure awards in both the packaging category and the technological category.

Award-Winning Products from Toyo Kankyo

Recycled Pulp Paper Cup (Packaging Award - Beverage Packaging)

This product epitomizes circular economy principles, as it involves the horizontal recycling of used beverage cups collected onboard Japan Airlines flights. The once-discarded paper cups are now reborn as new cups, a remarkable feat made possible by advancements in recycling technology and processing capabilities. This initiative doesn't just innovate in design; it represents a collaborative effort involving Japan Airlines and Nippon Paper Industries, showcasing the potential for sustainable practices in the aviation sector.

Through these advancements, we see a reduction in environmental impact and a significant step toward a more circular society. Previously, used cups would be recycled into less beneficial products, such as cardboard. However, the introduction of dedicated recycling facilities has drastically improved the accuracy of the recycling process, elevating both the efficacy and sustainability of paper cup usage in the aviation industry.

Award-Winning Products from Nippon Tokan Package

Spiral-Shaped Partition for Pastry Gift Boxes (Technological Award - Logistics)

In response to a modification in pastry quantities, where boxes were shifted from holding 18 to only 15 pastries, the packaging design underwent a transformation. It was crucial to reduce wasted space while ensuring the pastries could be stored stacked in a display-integrated shipping box.

A smart solution was implemented with the introduction of a spiral-shaped stopper, ensuring not only compatibility with the new quantity but also effective stabilization of the pastries, compressing empty space and facilitating secure storage.

Display Packaging for Commercial Flour Storage (Packaging Award - POP and Retail Packaging)

Nippon Tokan tackled the challenges of flour product visibility during displays by redesigning the box structure. The initial design included dividers that hindered the accessibility of products placed behind the front-facing items, making it difficult for consumers to easily view and retrieve them. The new design transforms the corners of the box into triangular pillars that support weight without traditional dividers. This innovative approach ensures an open front, improving product visibility and accessibility – a move that enhances consumer interaction and promotes sales.
