Grand Bahama Hotels Support Global Music Movement 'Bach in the Subways'

Grand Bahama Hotels and the Global Music Movement

In an inspiring move, Grand Bahama Hotels, which include locations in Sendai, Ginza, Atami, and Kyoto, are stepping up to support the international music initiative known as 'Bach in the Subways.' This event celebrates the birthday of the composer J.S. Bach on March 21 every year by offering musicians the opportunity to perform in public areas of the hotel free of charge, for two days in 2026, specifically on March 21 and 22.

The 'Bach in the Subways' movement began in 2010 when cellist Dale Henderson played Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites in the New York subway. He started this grassroots initiative to celebrate Bach's birthday and connect classical music with future generations, all while refusing to accept tips and instead distributing free postcards. This authentic musical experience resonated deeply with audiences, leading to a vast global participation with thousands of musicians across dozens of countries.

Grand Bahama Hotels is rich in philosophy aligned with the soothing and enriching qualities of Bach's music. They have embraced the essence of this initiative and are excited to be one of the participating venues in Japan. Their commitment manifests in the form of offering public performance spaces at four hotel locations over the two-day event.

Dale Henderson has expressed heartfelt gratitude for this initiative, stating, "I deeply appreciate Grand Bahama Hotels' efforts to provide free performance spaces for musicians. In Japan, it can be challenging to find quality public performance venues, and this endeavor will open many doors for artists."

How to Participate

Musicians interested in performing at this event can apply through the respective hotel websites. Each hotel will allocate 20 to 45 minutes for performances in designated public areas such as lobbies and restaurants. Performers are required to adhere to the movement's guidelines which include only playing Bach's compositions and not accepting any monetary compensation.

Join us in celebrating Bach's birthday as we sow the seeds of music around the world!
