Empowering Health and Wellness: A Look at the Summer Health Summit in Harlem

The highly anticipated Summer Health Summit hosted by Black Health Matters (BHM) is returning to Harlem on August 14, 2025, as part of Harlem Week. This day-long community event, taking place at The Riverside Church, is poised to be a game changer for many residents. Designed to inform, empower, and inspire, it offers a multitude of resources geared towards health and wellness, particularly for the Black community.

A Rich Legacy of Health Transformation

BHM has established itself as the nation’s leading health and wellness platform focused on the Black community. According to Roslyn Y. Daniels, President and Founder of Black Health Matters, the summit serves as a catalyst for change within a community rich in history and resilience. “Harlem is a neighborhood where people seek answers and access to better health,” Daniels asserts.

Throughout the day, participants can expect to find culturally relevant health screenings, expert panels, nutritious meals, and wellness giveaways. These offerings aim to meet individuals where they are and empower them to take control of their health journeys.

Addressing Critical Health Needs

In recent years, Harlem has faced significant health challenges, making the annual summit more crucial than ever. Recent policy changes at the federal level have raised concerns about health insurance accessibility, impacting an estimated 17 million Americans, including over 13,000 in Harlem. With chronic illness and mental health issues affecting the community, providing equitable, accessible health care is more urgent than ever.

“The Black Health Matters Summit embodies what HARLEM WEEK stands for: uplifting and empowering our community at a critical juncture,” says Winston Majette, Executive Director of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce.

Free Health Screenings and Expert Panels

The summit will feature complimentary health screenings valued over $2,500, including essential tests such as complete blood panels, A1C, glucose checks, and many more, addressing common health issues such as hypertension and diabetes.

The Clinical Trials Corner will also be present, focusing on representation in medical research and stressing the importance of trial participation. With expert panels and interactive workshops dedicated to topics like chronic disease prevention, mental health care, nutrition, and holistic wellness, attendees will have ample opportunities to gain valuable insights.

Celebrity Guests and Community Engagement

The event will include a lineup of notable guests from various fields, including Timon Kyle Durrett and Sandra Bookman, who aim to raise awareness and inspire healthy living. The vibrant expo hall will connect attendees with healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, and wellness advocates to foster community connections and resources.

A National Movement

The Harlem edition of the Summer Health Summit is a part of BHM’s broader 2025 national tour, which includes other cities like Atlanta and Charlotte. The organization has already welcomed over 80,000 participants since its inception, both in-person and virtually, emphasizing the community's desire for accessible health resources.

Conclusion

This free event is not just a health fair; it’s a powerful movement aimed at improving lives in Harlem and beyond. Black Health Matters is on a mission to radically redefine health and wellness for Black Americans, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge necessary for a healthier life.
