Global Cancer Drug Expenditure Set to Rise Over $400 Billion by 2028

Cancer Drug Expenditure on the Rise

In a groundbreaking revelation, the IQVIA Institute forecasts that global spending on cancer medications reached an astounding $252 billion in 2024 and is anticipated to exceed $400 billion by 2028. This dramatic increase is being driven largely by enhanced research efforts targeting colorectal and pancreatic cancers—two of the most challenging forms of the disease.

The landscape of oncology is evolving rapidly, with the U.S. alone accounting for approximately 46% of the total spending on cancer treatments. Between 2015 and 2024, around 150 new active substances made their way into the U.S. oncology market, marking an increase in the pace of new treatments. The current launch activity has surged almost 40% compared to the previous five-year period, underscoring the commitment to addressing unmet medical needs.

New Treatments and Approvals

Recent months have showcased rapid advancements in the oncology pipeline, with several noteworthy FDA approvals. For example, on August 26, the FDA greenlit the first broad RAS-targeted therapy for metastatic pancreatic cancer—a significant milestone for a tumor type historically challenging to treat. Additionally, in early October, the FDA approved a groundbreaking blood cancer therapy, a novel maintenance treatment for HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer, and a promising checkpoint inhibitor combination for stage III colorectal cancer. These approvals are instrumental in broadening the treatment landscape for many patients.

Gastrointestinal cancers, particularly those with RAS mutations, are attracting an increasing amount of attention from researchers and pharmaceutical companies alike. Historically deemed untreatable, these types of cancers lend themselves to new strategies, including targeted therapies, innovative drug combinations, and approaches aimed at enhancing the visibility of tumors to the immune system.

As we head towards autumn, the European Society for Medical Oncology will host its annual congress in Madrid from October 23 to 27, which is one of the premier events focused on new cancer data. Organizations like Oncolytics Biotech and others are expected to reveal updates on colorectal cancer treatments, showcasing how quickly the clinical landscape is changing.
