Montefiore Health System's Project Bravo Food Pantry Celebrates 20 Years of Community Service

Montefiore Health System proudly marks the 20th anniversary of its Project Bravo Food Pantry, a crucial initiative aimed at alleviating food insecurity in the Bronx. This program has been a beacon of hope for many as it continues to provide essential nourishment and hygiene products to families in need. Offering fresh produce and healthy options three times a week, Project Bravo has made a significant impact on the community. In the year 2024 alone, it supported over 40,000 Bronx residents.

Each week, Bronx residents seeking assistance can rely on Project Bravo, either by visiting directly or through referrals from Montefiore Medical Group's community partners and clinics. Through collaborations with organizations like Grow NYC, Food Bank of New York, and United Way, Project Bravo is not only ensuring that families receive nutritious foods but also providing additional essentials such as laundry detergent and festive meals.

A recent study published in Pediatrics, conducted by researchers at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore, highlighted the ongoing struggles with food insecurity among children, revealing that one in seven continues to face this critical issue despite available assistance programs. The study surveyed a representative sample of 16 million children in households that receive nutritional support through programs like WIC and SNAP, underscoring the continued need for services like Project Bravo that directly aid families across the country.

Tynisha Malone, MPA, the Program Director of Project Bravo Food Pantry, expressed the organization's commitment, stating, "It has been a privilege for us to help fill the gaps that families experience, from healthy food to warm clothing. We see our neighbors’ needs and are here to help, alongside our community partners."

In addition to food resources, Project Bravo's participants also benefit from personal care items and feminine hygiene products sourced from local wholesalers and universities. Malone and her dedicated volunteers have spent nearly 15 years gathering special items like Halloween treats and toys to distribute during the holiday season, ensuring that neighbors in need can celebrate with a little extra joy.

Dwight, a Bronx resident who has been relying on the food pantry for three years, emphasized the program's impact by stating, “Project Bravo is a place I can trust to access many resources. I get fresh and healthy products for making soups and stews and also have access to health education programs. I enjoy the cooking and painting classes offered here. Project Bravo provides sustenance and support in so many ways.”
