Globeleq Appoints Alasdair Martin as Director of Private Customer Solutions

Globeleq, a prominent independent power producer in Africa, has made a significant addition to its leadership team by appointing Alasdair Martin as the Director of Private Customer Solutions. This strategic move is intended to enhance the company's growth trajectory, particularly in the sectors of innovative energy solutions and sustainable transformation across Southern Africa.

In his new role, Alasdair Martin will oversee the origination, structuring, and execution of private power partnerships as well as tailored energy solutions for clients with high energy demands. This position is crucial for expanding Globeleq’s presence in the commercial energy market, as it aims to forge long-term partnerships with private electricity off-takers. These collaborations will facilitate access to dependable, cost-effective, and sustainable power, an essential factor in today’s energy landscape.

Alasdair brings with him almost two decades of extensive experience at Anglo American, where he led numerous major initiatives, including the impressive $3 billion carbon innovation portfolio that focused on creating renewable energy ecosystems. He also played a significant role in establishing Envusa Energy, a joint venture with EDF Renewables, which is considered a key player in reshaping and liberalizing the Southern African energy market.

His most recent accomplishments involved redesigning Anglo American’s operational model, which resulted in substantial transformational value and a cultural shift across the company's global operations. Alasdair's noteworthy background includes spearheading carbon-neutral strategies, attracting investment for large-scale renewable projects, and pioneering digital and AI solutions aimed at enhancing operational efficiency.

John Smelcer, Chief Development Officer at Globeleq, expressed his enthusiasm about the appointment. He stated, “The energy sector in Southern Africa is evolving rapidly, creating exciting opportunities for innovative partnerships. Alasdair’s technical expertise, commercial acumen, and sustainability vision will be instrumental in delivering custom solutions that meet the needs of industrial and commercial clients, all while supporting the region's energy transition.”

Reflecting on his new role, Alasdair Martin stated, “I am thrilled to join Globeleq as it seeks to expand its influence in shaping the energy future of Southern Africa. This position presents a unique chance to provide innovative, customer-centric solutions that expedite the transition to cleaner power, ultimately generating lasting value for both businesses and local communities. The commitment Globeleq demonstrates towards sustainability and collaboration strongly aligns with my own aspirations to build resilient energy ecosystems that foster growth and positive change.”
