Huawei and Partners Honour GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award for Groundbreaking Tech4Nature Project in Mexico

Awarding Innovation: Huawei's Commitment to Conservation

In a remarkable achievement, Huawei, in collaboration with key partners, has been recognized with the prestigious Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM award for their impactful Tech4Nature initiative. This project is aimed at environmental conservation, particularly focusing on the protection of the endangered jaguar in Yucatán, Mexico. The award was presented at the M360 LATAM 2026 event and highlights the use of innovative technology to foster sustainable practices in nature conservancy.

The Tech4Nature Initiative

Launched under a global partnership between Huawei and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Tech4Nature Mexico aims to leverage state-of-the-art technology to monitor and protect the natural habitats of jaguars. The project kicked off in 2022, marking the beginning of a multi-phase effort to integrate technology with environmental stewardship.

According to Samira Herrera, Huawei's Communications and Public Relations Director in Mexico, this recognition illustrates the potential of technology as a powerful tool for the enhancement of both people and the environment. She noted, "This project showcases how cross-sector collaboration can lead to tangible benefits for communities and biodiversity."

Collaborative Efforts and Innovations

The Tech4Nature project brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including the local communities of Dzilam de Bravo, government entities, and academic institutions like the Yucatán Polytechnic University (UPY). This collaborative effort employs advanced solutions such as AI to identify and monitor individual jaguars, along with community-led governance frameworks to ensure local involvement in conservation efforts.

Regina Cervera, Project Coordinator from AI for Climate at C Minds, emphasized the transformative power of technology in conservation. "Tech4Nature showcases how data can catalyze coordination, collective action, and impactful public policies aimed at natural protection," she remarked.

Key Achievements

Since its inception, the project has deployed an impressive array of technological tools including 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic monitoring devices across the reserve. These efforts have yielded significant results, identifying over 147 species, with 40 classified as endangered. Notably, 16 individual jaguars have been tracked, providing vital insights into their behaviour and movement patterns, critical for formulating effective conservation strategies.

Huawei's innovative cloud solutions tackle the data influx from the field, processing more than 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings. This data-driven approach allows for enhanced ecosystem monitoring, aiding not only in conservation efforts but also in the formulation of relevant public policies.

Another significant outcome of Tech4Nature Mexico is the expansion of the protected area from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares, illustrating the project's impact beyond just wildlife monitoring to broader ecological benefits.

Technological Integration and Future Aspirations

The integration of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data analytics has established a sustainable scientific model for conservation, blending cutting-edge technology with active community engagement. During the M360 LATAM 2026 event, discussions revolved around utilizing technology for sustainable development, echoing the sentiments of companies like Huawei who are dedicated to harnessing tech's potential for environmental good.

The GLOMO LATAM Awards serve as a platform to acknowledge transformative practices that drive technological, social, and environmental advancement across the region. The recognition of the Tech4Nature Mexico project underscores its innovative framework and the significant social and environmental benefits it fosters for Latin America.

In reaffirming their commitment, Huawei seeks to establish technology as a cornerstone for sustainable development, steering projects that not only protect endangered species but also elevate community well-being. Through the Tech4Nature initiative, Huawei continues to align with its broader TECH4ALL goal of leveraging technology for social good, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future for generations ahead.
