Hood College's Black Student Union Honors 51 Years of Community and Culture
Celebrating a Legacy of Empowerment and Community
On October 24, Hood College's Black Student Union (BSU) will commemorate its 51st anniversary, an impressive milestone that reflects decades of dedication to enriching the campus and surrounding Frederick community. This special occasion will be highlighted by a keynote address from Hill Harper, a celebrated actor, bestselling author, and philanthropist, known for his work in both the entertainment industry and as an advocate for youth empowerment.
Founded in 1974, the BSU at Hood College was established to foster social interaction and educational support for students. Its mission has evolved over the years, yet the core focus remains on increasing inclusion and understanding, creating a lasting impact within the college and the broader community. As emphasized by Ahmad Parker, BSU President, this event signifies more than just a celebration; it is an opportunity for shared experiences among successful individuals of color and fosters a closer-knit community among students.
Hill Harper, who has garnered acclaim for his roles in prominent television series such as "CSI NY" and "The Good Doctor," is also an influential author with four New York Times bestsellers to his name. His reputation extends beyond acting; he is the founder of the Manifest Your Destiny Foundation, which aims to empower underserved youth. Harper's impressive credentials include a master's degree from Harvard Kennedy School and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, along with serving on President Obama's Cancer Panel.
The upcoming anniversary event will take place at the Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall, kicking off at 6:30 PM. Attendees can expect an engaging evening that includes a keynote speech, a Q&A session, and a book signing by Harper. This interactive setting encourages open dialogue and inspires aspiring students and community members alike.
"To be in a room with others who have shared experiences and gained valuable insights is invaluable," remarked Parker about the anticipated experience. The BSU takes great pride in its efforts to provide a space that is educational, inclusive, and welcoming for all.
Tammi Simpson, vice president for community and inclusivity at Hood College, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Hill Harper's commitment to positive change through storytelling and youth empowerment. His work addresses crucial issues such as closing the wealth gap, promoting social justice, and motivating young people to follow their dreams.
In an era where inclusivity and representation matter more than ever, events like this highlight the importance of Black culture and community. Through the BSU’s ongoing initiatives, students at Hood College and the Frederick community will benefit from continued awareness and understanding of the richness of Black heritage.
As Hood College celebrates this remarkable journey of its Black Student Union, it looks forward to nurturing future generations of leaders in the community and beyond, promoting values of inclusivity and empowerment for all.
