Reviving Basho: The Interactive AI Prototype of Matsuo Basho is Here

Reviving Matsuo Basho with Advanced AI Technology

In an innovative melding of history and technology, Hibino Graphics, part of the Hibino Group, has developed an interactive, life-sized AI prototype of the famed Japanese poet Matsuo Basho. This project aims to transform cultural experiences by enabling real-time conversations with a digital representation of Basho. The prototype is set to be publicly tested at the Iga City Central Library in Mie Prefecture from October 1 to 15, 2026, allowing visitors to engage with a historical figure in a unique and immersive way.

A Revolutionary Approach to Historical Interaction

The AI Matsuo Basho project stands out due to its cost-effective approach. While conventional android robots often require millions in development costs, Hibino’s prototype has achieved a substantially lower budget, costing only about one-eighth of traditional methods. Furthermore, the adaptability of AI technology allows for continuous updates, making it a sustainable option for historical engagement.

This prototype utilizes Samsung's advanced spatial display technology to create a captivating experience. A large 85-inch display brings Basho to life in stunning detail, providing users with the sensation of conversing with the poet himself. The machine employs a thin display, just 5.2cm thick, allowing for a three-dimensional representation that makes Basho's presence feel tangible and real.

Natural Interaction Powered by AI

The system leverages cutting-edge technology developed by the American startup Klleon, known for its innovative digital human engine. This allows the AI to exhibit natural facial expressions and mouth movements, facilitating real-time conversations that are both engaging and interactive. The AI boasts a response time of approximately two seconds, ensuring fluid dialogue and a seamless user experience.

The Testing Phase

The upcoming public demonstration aims to explore the interactions between citizens, tourists, and the AI Matsuo Basho. The initiative seeks to gather feedback through surveys regarding Basho's appearance and the nature of the dialogue. The intention is to cultivate this digital personality in collaboration with the community, ensuring that it resonates with the cultural heritage it represents.

Key Details of the Demonstration:
  • - Location: Iga City Central Library “Sakakura Corner”
  • - Duration: October 1 to October 15 (aligned with the library’s operating hours, closing early on the last day at 5 PM)
  • - Participation: Organized by the Ueno High School Alumni Association and the Sensei no Kukai club, with collaboration from Hibino Graphics, Iga City Central Library, Klleon Japan, and TRC-ADEAC.

Conclusion

This avant-garde project not only offers an exciting glimpse into the future of historical engagement but also holds potential for broader applications in fields such as museums, libraries, and educational tourism. Hibino Graphics continues to push the boundaries of how we connect with our cultural past, making history accessible to future generations through technology.
