A Unique Experience: Exploring the Kanagawa River Power Station
On August 27, 2025, the Japan Riders Forum (JRF), based in Shibuya, Tokyo, hosted a unique touring event called "Nippon Support Touring 2025," featuring an exclusive visit to the Kanagawa River Power Station alongside renowned biker Kazama Shin. With a total of 12 participants, including 9 bikers and representatives from Tokyo Electric Power Renewable Power, this adventure was filled with learning and excitement.
The Journey Begins
The tour commenced from the parking lot at the Hanno Tourist Information Center in Saitama Prefecture. Led by Kazama Shin, participants rode their motorcycles towards Ueno Village, Gunma Prefecture. The route took them through the lush forests thriving on timber production in Hanno, providing breathtaking views of the iconic Bukohan Mountain known for its limestone quarrying. The participants enjoyed smooth riding on Route 299, which is known for its fewer traffic signals, earning appreciation for the well-planned itinerary that allowed them to ride comfortably.
Many participants, who typically enjoy solo touring, expressed their delight in the camaraderie experienced during this group ride, sharing a newfound value in enjoying biking together.
Entering an Underground World
Upon reaching Ueno Village, the group transitioned from motorcycles to a bus for a visit to the Kanagawa River Power Station. Descending around 500 meters underground, they entered a massive space reminiscent of a sci-fi movie. They were introduced to the workings of one of the largest pumped-storage hydroelectric power stations in the world and had an opportunity to observe the facilities up close.
On this particular day, participants were fortunate enough to witness motor maintenance work, gaining access to the interior of disassembled motors that are typically not included in standard tours. Many expressed their amazement at the innovative approach of storing electrical energy using water as a substitute, sparking conversations about the traditional functions of dams and the significant lessons learned through this enlightening tour.
A Unique Learning Opportunity
This exploration was a rare chance for participants to visit a site that is not often accessible to the average individual, providing a valuable opportunity to learn about its technical aspects and underlying operations. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with comments emphasizing how interesting and engaging the experience was. They appreciated the chance to engage with others and participate in activities that they wouldn't typically experience.
