This initiative wasn't born overnight; it stems from the grassroots soccer team, Nobushi Japan, which was formed in 2008 under the auspices of the Big Issue Japan fund. This team, made up of homeless individuals and others facing various social challenges, has been pivotal in creating a supportive network for athletes from marginalized communities to engage in sports.

As of today, over 1,500 participants from diverse backgrounds—including those who are homeless, struggling with mental health issues, LGBT individuals, refugees, and youth from orphanages—have claimed their space on the field through futsal and soccer events organized by the association. Activities like the Diversity Soccer Festival in 2025 and the Homeless World Cup set for 2024 in Seoul aim to foster inclusivity and meaningful interactions among participants.

Why the Homeless World Cup?

The driving force behind the ambition to participate in the Homeless World Cup lies in the remarkable impact the tournament has had on societal engagement. In the previous 2024 tournament held in Seoul, approximately 450 players from around 38 countries participated in a thrilling eight-day event. The campaign runs from May 14 to June 30, 2025, with the Homeless World Cup scheduled for August 23 to 30 in Oslo.
