UPDATER's Commitment to Climate Action and the New Memorial Day
In an effort to combat the increasing impact of climate change, UPDATER Inc., based in Setagaya, Tokyo, has aligned with the Japan Climate Leaders' Partnership (JCLP), which has established August 8 as the official 'Day to End Scorching Summer.' This initiative aims to expedite decarbonization efforts, both nationally and internationally.
Starting from August 8, 2025, this newly recognized date will serve as a call to action regarding the dire effects of climate change, which have become starkly apparent in Japan through rising temperatures leading to heat-related illnesses, increased impacts on labor and agriculture, and growing strains on societal infrastructure including water damage. Despite the overwhelming presence of hot days, public discourse linking extreme heat to climate change has remained limited, highlighting a critical gap in climate action awareness.
JCLP seeks to address this disconnect with the 'Day to End Scorching Summer,' creating a significant societal moment to reframe perceptions of extreme heat as a climate change issue. The primary goal is to share a collective determination to halt the climate crisis for future generations, acting as a catalyst for systemic societal change.
What distinguishes this memorial day is its intent to eventually become obsolete. The hope is that through strong actions, humanity can effectively combat climate change and eliminate the need for this commemorative day.
About JCLP
The Japan Climate Leaders' Partnership (JCLP) was founded in 2009 and consists of over 230 member companies that recognize the necessity of collective action for a decarbonization society. The combined revenue of its members stands at approximately 160 trillion yen, with a total electricity consumption of around 80 TWh. Since 2017, JCLP has been an official regional partner of the international non-profit organization, The Climate Group, facilitating various initiatives aimed at reducing emissions in Japan, such as RE100 and EV100.
UPDATER's Action Plan and Future Prospects
Current Initiatives
For UPDATER, this commitment is rooted in its original business model—providing visible and sustainable energy options through 'Everyone's Electricity.' This year, UPDATER has engaged in numerous corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) aimed at offering advanced decarbonization choices to both corporates and individuals. Collaborations with the Marui Group and Ricoh have led to proposals for creating high-impact, narrative-driven power generation facilities. Additionally, UPDATER has pioneered a power tracking system that enables 24/7 carbon-free electricity, setting a precedent in Japan.
On the individual level, UPDATER has launched the 'Setagaya Peepa (tentative name)' project, which utilizes former school sites for a cloud-based solar energy initiative. This project aims to provide opportunities for people living in collective housing who cannot install solar panels to generate their own energy.
Internationally, UPDATER's solar PPA introduced to Tanzanian farms has significantly reduced losses caused by power outages and diminished fuel costs and CO₂ emissions.
Future Goals
UPDATER remains dedicated to scaling initiatives that offer engaging power generation options while actively contributing to community revitalization through energy solutions. They plan to expand their cloud-based solar energy portfolio, bringing diverse, meaningful options to individuals. The company also aims to further international expansion in Tanzania while fostering renewable energy models that benefit local communities. Additionally, UPDATER intends to incorporate new technologies such as perovskite solar cells, AI for energy supply optimization, and battery utilization in its efforts towards decarbonization. Moving forward, UPDATER sees 'The Day to End Scorching Summer' as a pivotal moment in their mission to confront and ultimately resolve the climate crisis.
