The Rise of Self-Checkout: Consumer Preferences Across Age Groups in Retail

In a recent survey conducted by Web Space Co., a leading provider of POS systems in Japan, it was found that more than 60% of consumers aged between 20 to 60 favor using self-checkout kiosks over traditional staffed registers in retail environments. This trend holds strong even among older age groups, with over half of respondents aged 50 and 60 showing a inclination towards self-service options.

Background

The retail sector has been rapidly adopting self-checkout technologies amidst a labor shortage. While it is often viewed as a method for businesses to reduce staffing needs, this shift also reflects a change in consumer behavior and preferences. Particularly influenced by the growth of cashless payment and contactless shopping demands, it's crucial to understand how different age groups perceive and utilize self-checkouts.

Survey Overview

Conducted between August 4 and August 5, 2026, the study targeted a diverse demographic of 913 men and women aged 20 to 60 via online methods. The results spotlight significant trends:
  • - Over 60% of respondents prefer self-checkout when both options are available.
  • - Notably, this preference extends to individuals in their 50s and 60s as well.
  • - The primary reason cited for choosing self-checkout is the reduction in transaction time, with other factors including avoiding interactions with staff and the ease of cashless payments.

Key Findings

Preference for Self-Checkout

When asked if they prefer self-checkout or staffed registers, 49% of respondents indicated they often choose self-checkout, while 26% usually go for a staffed register. An additional 14.5% confirmed they always opt for self-checkouts, indicating a notable shift in consumer behavior. As age decreases, the likelihood of selecting self-checkout increases, with over 53% of respondents aged 60 still preferring this option.

Reasons for Choosing Self-Checkout

Among those who opt for self-checkout, the leading reason (34.4%) cited was the ability to minimize waiting times at the register. Other notable reasons included not needing to interact with staff (21.5%) and the seamless experience of using cashless payment methods (20.9%). Interestingly, nearly 47% of respondents in their 60s particularly valued the reduction in wait times, suggesting that older consumers are increasingly embracing self-service technologies.

Situational Preferences

Respondents indicated that they primarily prefer self-checkouts in scenarios where the staffed register lines are long (65.8%) or when purchasing a small number of items (47.8%). Additionally, younger respondents expressed a desire to avoid interactions with staff more so than their older counterparts. In contrast, only 7.2% of those in their 60s reported a preference for silence during their shopping experience.

Challenges Faced

Despite their apparent favor, self-checkout users do encounter challenges. Although 30% reported no dissatisfaction with the process, others noted concerns over problems such as low barcode reading accuracy (29.5%) and worries about potential checkout errors (19.1%). This dissatisfaction was particularly pronounced among older respondents, where over 30% identified barcode issues as a top concern.

Conclusion

The findings reveal a significant trend among consumers where self-checkout is preferred across the age spectrum, with a pronounced emphasis on efficiency. The primary reason behind this choice is the reduced transaction time. Web Space Co. recognizes this growing preference and is committed to improving the shopping experience with its dual-function POS systems that help alleviate staffing shortages and enhance customer satisfaction.
