Health Net's $4 Million Investment to Boost Affordable Housing in Modesto
In a significant move to improve the quality of life for residents in Modesto, California, Health Net has announced a substantial investment of $4 million dedicated to the construction of Morris Village, a new community designed to provide affordable housing. This initiative aims to address a pressing need for stable housing options among families and individuals in the Stanislaus County area, particularly those grappling with housing instability and health-related challenges.
Health Net, a leading Medi-Cal managed care health plan and part of Centene Corporation, has a long-standing commitment to serving low-income populations across California. Dorothy Seleski, the president of Medi-Cal at Health Net, highlighted the importance of stable housing: "A safe and stable home can make a lasting difference in an individual's health and well-being. Our investment reflects our dedication to tackling the root causes of health issues in the communities we serve."
The project will consist of 45 affordable housing units designated for individuals and families earning below the area median income. This funding will bridge the financial gap needed for construction, ensuring that the project can proceed without delays. Mani Grewal, a supervisor for Stanislaus County, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, "Affordable housing is one of the most urgent needs facing families in the county. The $4 million contribution from Health Net, alongside the expertise of Self-Help Enterprises, will help Modesto residents lead healthier lives and strengthen our neighborhoods."
Construction is anticipated to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026, with completion projected for spring 2028. Tom Collishaw, the CEO of Self-Help Enterprises, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact: "Morris Village will add 45 much-needed housing units in Modesto, providing not just shelter but a foundation for health, stability, and opportunities. Our collaboration with Health Net has been pivotal in making this initiative possible."
Beyond providing housing, Self-Help Enterprises plans to partner with local service providers and community organizations to connect future residents with essential services and support systems. This holistic approach aims to empower individuals to thrive long after they move into their new homes.
Sue Zwahlen, the mayor of Modesto, reflected on the crucial role of housing in healthcare, saying, "As a registered nurse, I know that housing is a fundamental component of care. Access to affordable housing enhances overall well-being and allows families to flourish in our community. We are grateful for Health Net’s investment and the leadership of Self-Help Enterprises in making this possible."
Since 2020, Health Net has allocated a remarkable $93 million toward housing initiatives and homelessness assistance throughout California, striving to create long-term stability and improved health outcomes for those in need. The Morris Village project is the latest addition to this ongoing commitment.
Health Net believes that quality healthcare should be available to everyone, regardless of age, income, employment status, or current health. With over 117,000 providers in their network, Health Net serves over three million members statewide, providing access to critical healthcare services, including substance abuse treatment and mental health services. This dedication to community health and welfare reflects the core mission of Health Net and Centene Corporation in transforming healthcare, one individual at a time.
