Shizuoka City Launches New Business Creation Program "NE[X]T" to Foster Startup Collaboration

Shizuoka City Launches the "NE[X]T" Program

Shizuoka City has officially kicked off its new open innovation program, "NE[X]T," aimed at fostering the next wave of business initiatives through collaboration with startups. The program, managed by AlphaDrive's local subsidiary, aims to support established companies within the city as they navigate the challenges of the modern economy.

Program Overview

The "NE[X]T" initiative encourages regional businesses to partner with innovative startups over a period of nine months to co-create solutions tailored to their specific needs. Companies will engage in a comprehensive program that provides practical seminars, support from experienced business development experts, and access to a nationwide network of startups. Best of all, the program is completely free for participating companies.

The slogan of "NE[X]T" is "Innovation arises where there is intersection." This encapsulates the program's ethos of merging ideas from various sectors to develop viable future projects. With economic pressures like rising prices and labor shortages stressing local businesses, Shizuoka City aims to combat these issues by promoting collaboration between contemporary firms and emerging startups.

Addressing Economic Challenges

"While many companies have strong technologies and customer bases, they are struggling to take their next steps forward," noted CEO of AlphaDrive, Yoichi Aso. The sentiment reflects the difficulties local companies face in envisioning their future amidst economic uncertainty. Shizuoka City has acknowledged this challenge and has implemented policies to catalyze innovation through the collaboration of local businesses and startups.

"NE[X]T" is now entering its third year, having supported 25 local companies over its first two iterations. With a track record of assisting over 260 companies across 30 prefectures and facilitating nearly 24,000 business initiatives since 2018, the AlphaDrive group brings valuable mentorship experience to this new program.

Mentorship and Support

The program does not simply facilitate a one-time partnership; it aims to deeply explore each participating company's challenges by sharpening their business concepts and ensuring they can articulate their unique value propositions. The goal is for each company to undergo transformation that contributes positively to the local economy.

The collaborative structure of the program includes a joint partnership with key regional entities, including Shizuoka Railway, to ensure that operations are closely aligned with local needs and resources.

Features of the NE[X]T Program

Tailored Support Models

Participants can select from four distinct support models to best suit their needs:
1. Problem-Solving Model: Focus on a specific challenge and co-create solutions with startups.
2. Business Idea Creation Model: Develop new business ideas based on customer insights.
3. Existing Business Development Model: Expand existing operations into new value-added services or clients.
4. New Business Theme Creation Model: Define themes based on company strengths and seek collaborative ideas.

Comprehensive Support Over Nine Months

From the initial consultation to proof-of-concept projects, each participating business will have consistent support from an assigned expert mentor. This structured process encompasses hypothesis refinement, startup matchmaking, and the design and verification of proofs of concept.

Financial Assistance for Successful Applicants

Participating companies that are selected—approximately 15 in total—will receive funds to cover expenses related to prototypes, research, and development. Companies in strategic industries can receive up to 3.4 million yen, while others can secure funding up to 2.5 million yen, depending on their needs and contributions.

Application Process

The NE[X]T program, organized by Shizuoka City and managed by the Fujinokuni Future Creation Lab (comprising AlphaDrive Shizuoka and Shizuoka Railway), welcomes businesses based in Shizuoka City regardless of their industry or size. The program particularly encourages applications from sectors like manufacturing, marine industries, food wellness, logistics, creative arts, and tourism, especially those led by successors aged 39 or younger.
