In November 2024, what started as a regular senior baseball tournament at the Lee Health Sports Complex escalated into a dire emergency, showcasing Lee County's dedication to community safety.

During a heated match, 64-year-old player Keenan Brown suffered from sudden cardiac arrest, collapsing on the field. In a matter of seconds, Tony Nazarro, the Security Supervisor, leapt into action, recognizing the critical situation. He quickly retrieved an Avive Connect AED®, strategically positioned at an accessible public location, and utilized it to deliver two lifesaving shocks to Keenan before emergency medical services could arrive. Thanks to this swift response and the placement of the AED, Keenan made it through – a testament to the community's preparedness.

Keenan recalled the harrowing experience: "I don't remember anything until I woke up to see many people around me, an AED next to me, and Tony there. I have many heroes, but he ranks among the top. That AED – I can't express how much it played a role in my survival."

One year later, Keenan made a triumphant return to the baseball field, no longer as a patient but as a proud player. Accompanied by his wife Janine and their three young children, they cheered for him on the same field where his life was saved, making the site a symbol of resilience and appreciation for the community's readiness.

Director of Public Safety, Benjamin Abes, emphasized the importance of timely access to defibrillation, stating, "I have witnessed incredible advancements in technology for diagnostics and treatment, but none of that holds value if we can't provide a shock to a cardiac arrest victim swiftly."

Lee County's commitment to public safety is evident in the deployment of over 250 Avive Connect AEDs across various public facilities, including sports complexes, ensuring that lifesaving equipment is always within reach. This innovative approach allows the county's 911 and emergency teams to not only locate but also monitor AEDs, ensuring they remain in optimal condition.

According to Casey Allo, Emergency Communications Manager for Lee County Public Safety, the integration of Avive’s technology has transformed how AEDs are utilized. "Understanding the AED’s location and being aware of its current status with real-time diagnostics gives us an incredible advantage. We can see battery levels and be notified if someone has deployed one, making it a highly effective tool."
