YKK AP30 Building Achieves ZEB and WELL Platinum Certification

YKK AP30 Building Achieves ZEB and WELL Platinum Certification

The YKK AP30 Building, located in Kurobe, Toyama Prefecture, has recently been recognized for its exceptional sustainability and health standards. It has obtained two prestigious certifications: the Net Zero Energy Building (ZEB) and the WELL Building Standard™ at the Platinum level. These achievements highlight YKK AP's commitment to creating healthy and environmentally friendly workspaces.

Overview of the YKK AP30 Building

Founded by YKK AP Co., Ltd., with headquarters based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, the YKK AP30 Building was designed to serve as a modern office that prioritizes employee wellbeing and ecological balance. Slated for completion in October 2024, this building embodies the concept of an office nestled in nature, blending seamlessly with its environment.

Achieving ZEB certification indicates that the annual primary energy consumption of the building is at or below zero. This is a demanding benchmark that emphasizes advanced insulation and energy efficiency measures. In November 2024, the building will undergo BELS evaluation and aims to achieve the highest rating of ★6 stars, further reinforcing its energy-saving credentials.

In November 2025, the building is expected to earn the WELL certification, which focuses on the health and happiness of individuals within the space, marking it as a pioneering model in the office environment.

Essentials of ZEB and WELL Certifications

To achieve ZEB status, a building's exterior insulation performance is critical. Additionally, obtaining WELL certification requires careful consideration of natural light and views, necessitating a design that ensures both energy efficiency and accessible openings. The YKK AP30 Building incorporates their proprietary full-height windows, SYSTEMA 31, which provide bright, open spaces while maximizing energy efficiency. This dual focus aims to reduce environmental impact while ensuring a healthy and comfortable office environment.

Natural Ventilation Strategies

The building's design leverages natural elements such as wind, light, and water for energy efficiency. It incorporates deep eaves and sloped roofs to facilitate wind flow and includes natural ventilation windows, EXIMA 31 Balance Way, which promote effective airflow. Traditional practices, such as integrating local trees for windbreaks and sunlight control, are also part of the landscaping plan, ensuring optimal environmental comfort throughout the year.

Advanced Lighting Solutions

Light management within the YKK AP30 Building is enhanced by its full-height, 2.4m windows and high-side lights, which allow ample daylight into the workspace while reducing reliance on artificial lighting. This design not only minimizes energy use but also enhances the overall atmosphere of the office. The implementation of SYSTEMA 31 windows, constructed with a 12mm air layer and insulated glazing, ensures that heat loss is kept to a minimum, which is crucial for maintaining the ZEB status.

Water Resource Management

Water efficiency is another key component of the building's design. It utilizes natural well water from the site, taking advantage of the stable temperature year-round, for HVAC systems. Additionally, solar power technologies are integrated for generating energy, aligning with sustainability goals and reinforcing the zero-energy design.

Fostering Wellbeing in the Workplace

YKK AP30 Building's approach extends beyond physical structures to promote mental and physical health. With a design that opens up every view towards Kurobe's scenic landscapes, it aims to create a connection with nature, allowing occupants to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. The workspace is designed to ensure that employees enjoy natural elements, supporting their overall wellbeing.

Employee-Centric Facilities

The cafeteria, which serves local seasonal produce with clear nutritional information, aims to support employees' health. Furthermore, the building features art that represents the local environment, fostering a sense of community and connection to the venue. Notably, the installation of private restrooms equipped with free menstrual products addresses gender equity, enhancing comfort and accessibility.

To commemorate these significant achievements in sustainability and wellness, a completion plaque was placed on-site in March 2024. YKK AP remains dedicated to advancing energy-efficient construction while ensuring a supportive environment for all who work within its walls, contributing to a healthier, sustainable future.
